... I often search site:nara.gov for the number of a NARA microfilm followed by a dot and PDF to find the pdf downloads. Also available via NARA's microfilm catalog.
For FamilySearch, *especially* for FamilySearch collections which are mirrored on Ancestry and findmypast, I always go back to the FamilySearch catalog to read the Film Notes.
