THE SWITCH 2 DOCK IS @frameworkcomputer COMPATIBLE LMAO
@leo @frameworkcomputer oh hey finally no weird fucked up custom stuff over USB3
@timonsku the console doesnt work with other usb-c docks though apparently, one manufacturer said that they identified the root cause and it's a display timing issue that can be fixed in the dock firmware which sounds weird but vaguely plausible
@leo @frameworkcomputer afaik both switch 1 and 2 used just basic USB C docking, which means every device that supports USB C docks would work with them, the same way switches work with regular USB C docks
@MarkAssPandi @frameworkcomputer no the switch 1 dock wasnt standards compatible its just that almost every usb-c dock released in the past few years supports nintendo's non-standard variant
@leo @frameworkcomputer oh damn im stupid then
@leo @frameworkcomputer idk why this reminded me of situation where u could use C to C cable to connect switch to macbook and switch would like charge the macbook lol
@MarkAssPandi i mean this is kind of fundamental to having a bidirectional port. i guess you could argue that a handheld is "more portable" than a laptop and should be Try.SNK? but that seems mildly arbitrary, honestly
ideally there would be an option in the OS to reverse direction but afaik nothing except android actually implements that
@leo @MarkAssPandi YES! Give me a big "reverse polarity" button! Star Trek is finally here! πŸ˜‚
how about switch 1?
@ave.zone havent personally tried but many people have reported that it doesnt work (both the switch 1 in the switch 2 dock and non-nintendo devices in the switch 1 dock)
yet another good justification for the framework 13 to be able to bend flat
@leo @frameworkcomputer oh my god that probably means the expansion cards are switch 2 compatible
@leo @frameworkcomputer DISPLAYPORT ON SWITCH 2 😭
@autumn @frameworkcomputer @leo I mean it uses displayport internally
@frameworkcomputer @leo @autumn the hdmi is converted from dp inside the dock because fuck hdmi forum that's why
sounds about right, the switch consoles just use usb-pd and dp alt-mode
@leo NIKO ONESHOT ‼️‼️‼️
@leo @frameworkcomputer oh I gotta check if it also works with Samsung DeX, I remember the switch dock didn’t but this one could

@leo Niko

Also: That's so cursed

Does it recharge the laptop?

@leo @frameworkcomputer honestly, i think its just a regular usb c dock. so even steamdeck should work theoretically IMO

@leo
Nintendon't being compatible with anything?

Not what I would expect, to put it mildly.

@frameworkcomputer

@leo @frameworkcomputer Maybe we can stop posting (and boosting) 8 MB PNG files to the fediverse or someone adds a feature that automatically downscales/converts them to some more appropriate file sizes :/
@leo @frameworkcomputer holy crap lmao
@SebinNyshkim oh nice you're better at balancing than i am
@leo I took one of the USB-C ports out and plugged it into the dock first, then lowered the Framework onto it and reconnected the port. I noticed there's a spring mechanism in the dock that needs to be pushed down to reveal the connector, which made it difficult to wiggle-guess where it actually needed to go
@SebinNyshkim yeah thats what i did it just would fall over if i let go
@SebinNyshkim i think the trick is to line up the gap between the esc and tilde keys with the edge of the filled in half of the logo
@leo @frameworkcomputer I *REALLY* Like this as a Feature (even if this is probably not the intended usage :D)
@HazeCore @frameworkcomputer it's not actually practical, nintendo uses a special low-mating-force USB-C connector that means the laptop will fall over if i take my hand off it (the reason they do that is so that if you pick up the console the dock doesn't come with it)
@HazeCore @frameworkcomputer though actually it looks like another reply might've been better at balancing it than i was so
@HazeCore @frameworkcomputer yeah okay nm i just put it in badly the first time. the trick is to line up the gap between the esc and tilde keys with the edge of the filled in half of the logo
@leo @frameworkcomputer I own neither a switch, or a Framework... But I will keep it in mind πŸ˜…πŸ˜
i love my toaster
@leo @frameworkcomputer Can't believe it, their actually using standard HDMI over USB C with the new dock instead of whatever proprietary nonsense they had with Switch 1's dock.
@Umbreon @leo @frameworkcomputer switch 1 was in development at the same time as usb c. They didn't know the standard while developing.
@joshix ah fair enough (though I did wish the Switch 2 docking process didn't require encryption signatures despite otherwise being a standard dock.
What kind of computer is that?
@frameworkcomputer @leo wait so did you just put the dock's "male" connector in your computer's port?
Now I want someone to jam the mainboard into a handheld form factor even more.
@leo @frameworkcomputer that’s incredible, what does it show up as in lsusb?
