PPN@oceaniceternity outside of personal preference, it’s not just a weird bias of watch enthusiasts. Audible ticking is often associated with the idea of poor quality/bad oil/broken seal. A bit like when a rotor is too noisy.

That reminds me that I must get my old clock going again. It has a really loud tick that everyone else hates but being deaf I like as I can, just, hear it.
It stopped on the 4th Sept 2010 at 4.35am for reasons you can probably guess.
After that I kept putting off starting it again but you've inspired me to do so. Now where I put the winding key...
