There have been lots of complaints about new traffic calming and active transport improvements in my neighbourhood in northeast Edmonton: speed limit reduction to 40kph, separated bike lanes, narrowed driving lanes.

I caught a little factoid recently that demonstrates the need: in 2023 before the roadwork only 9% of traffic on 40St complied with the speed limit. Thanks to bad road design and a ridiculous sense of driver entitlement:

**! 93% !** of drivers sped through.

I admit: I was sometimes one of them despite my best efforts because the road design was *that* bad, but based on the complaints it’s clear many of my neighbours feel that following a speed limit is an unreasonable imposition on their freedom (read ‘privilege’)

One thing I appreciate about design-based traffic calming measures is that they make it much easier to remember to slow down as they tend to be present over long distances, versus one blink-and-you-miss-it speed sign often nestled among bunch of other signage.

Now that we have three different speeds for residential areas, I very much appreciate the extra visual cues!
