Gaslit Nation: How a Christian School Kid in Indiana Saw the Fall of Democracies Coming

This week, we’re joined by the brilliant , a scholar, writer, and all-around truth-teller. Chrissy is a leading voice in exposing the Christian nationalist movement, the exvangelical uprising, and the growing marriage between the American and Russian far-right. She also happens to be a trans woman with a PhD in Russian history and a wild journey that took her from a fundamentalist Christian school in Indiana to teaching in Moscow. Chrissy and Andrea go way back to the early days of calling out Trump’s ties to Russia when doing so earned us hit pieces, smears, and even being called CIA agents or Russian spies, depending on who was yelling. In this episode, we dig into everything: Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws (and why Trump proudly ignored the global boycott to host Miss Universe there in 2013), the dismantling of American public education, and why Christian nationalism is not just a domestic threat; it’s a global movement. Chrissy breaks down how the Christian Right has long operated its own post-truth disinformation ecosystem and how the fear of hell was used as an emotional bludgeon to control kids like her, until her queer awakening in Russia at age 33. She’s living proof that you can deconstruct the indoctrination, with a little help of Ranger Rick, and build a life outside of it. From pledges to the Bible and the American flag to Putin’s regime and America’s culture wars, Chrissy’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, resistance, and reclaiming truth.  Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? 2/ While the Left debates protest decorum, the Right is building an army in churches, schools, and Fox News.

Trump’s “big beautiful bill” includes $160B to expand ICE. It’s a concentration camp bill:

The “big beautiful bill” has $160bn in new anti-immigrant measures including $8bn for ICE personnel, $15bn for deportations and $45bn to build detention facilities. Current total ICE budget is ~$8bn. They want to scale up this terror to an unimaginable level. https://www.wola.org/analysis/160-billion-to-detain-and-deport-congresss-reconciliation-bill-is-a-betrayal-of-priorities-and-will-harm-the-most-vulnerable/

3/ Chrissy was a Christian school kid in Indiana. A sign at school: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” Then came the indoctrination: “‘Liberals are evil, they're killing babies… we have to stop these gay people who want special rights.’” https://gaslitnation.libsyn.com/how-a-christian-school-kid-in-indiana-saw-the-fall-of-democracies-coming

4/ As someone raised with Jesus’s words of “love thy neighbor,” I’ll say it plainly: These people aren’t Christians. They’re extremists using religion to justify hate. Chrissy Stroop lays out exactly how they built the machine, and it starts with James Dobson.
5/ In the 1970s, James Dobson founds Focus on the Family. His mentor: A literal eugenicist. Dobson built a right-wing media empire pushing his books like Dare to Discipline, normalizing child abuse in Jesus’s name.
6/ Chrissy Stroop remembers: “We were hit with wooden spoons; sometimes they’d break. In homeschooling, they’d recommend long glue sticks, because they don’t leave bruises. They talked openly about how to avoid Child Protective Services.” GOP weakened homeschooling laws.
7/ “You’ve got to break their will.” That was Dobson’s mantra. And it wasn’t just about kids. It’s how authoritarian systems work: beat people physically, emotionally, spiritually, until they submit. That’s what the Right wants for all of us.
8/ Chrissy Stroop escaped evangelical indoctrination to expose it. She connects US Christian nationalism to global fascist threats. Putin’s anti-gay laws in 2013 were a turning point. Guess who broke the boycott against Russia? Trump with his Moscow Miss Universe pageant.

9/ In 2013: Trump breaks a global boycott of Russia after decades of depending on Russian money. In 2014: Russia invades Ukraine as Trump defends Russia on Fox News. In 2016: Russia helps Trump win.

Anyone who tells you there's no Trump/Russia connection is stupid or has an agenda.

10/ As Russia invades Ukraine in 2014, here’s Trump praising Russia on Fox News and calling for riots in the streets of America, to destroy our country from within. It’s all coming to pass: https://youtu.be/yXlGj8N_t8Y?si=81NTvMZekxb092UI&t=461

11/ A friend told me she’s too scared to protest. That’s how fascism wins: it feeds on your fear. Don't give it to them. That's how we win. Join us: NoKings.org

You're only as free as you are brave.

@AndreaChalupa and you’ll meet new friends with similar ideals just by showing up.
@AndreaChalupa
My Granddaughter went to her first protest about a month ago and some older woman asked her where they'd run to when the bullets start flying. Smaller town, lazy and laid back but plenty of trumpers there. But, the woman shows up for every protest, bless her heart.
@Puck @AndreaChalupa Always have an exit plan, preferably several.
@AndreaChalupa I’m not too scared but I’m definitely too sick. That’s part of why they wanted everyone to get Covid (my MECFS came from mono not covid, but it’s permanent and disabling regardless.)

@AndreaChalupa Outside of immediate hot spots (even in LA right now, less than 1% of the city is in any way "hot"), or possibly events in parts of a city that are already somewhat dangerous for unrelated reasons (really not common for events like these) you're not going to be in significant danger in a major rally/protest like "No Kings". At least not in more danger than in any urban situation with lots of people around.

In fact, one of the points of getting as many people as possible to such events is precisely to keep it that way. Not just for the specific event. To push back on the government and make it harder for it to indulge in widespread violence.
