The Man in #Seat61 seems like a relic from a forgotten age of the #Internet.

Seat61.com is a genuinely useful website created by just one guy, a train travel enthusiast who has curated a vast array of information that will help anyone who would like to travel in #Europe by #train

He is not trying to sell you anything and there are no adverts (apart from a few affiliate ids).

His website has won various "best travel website" awards. Notably the last one was in 2012.

The Man in Seat 61 | The train travel guide

How to travel by train in Europe & worldwide: Schedules, fares & how to buy tickets.

@strangequark Highly useful resource, I refer to it all the time.
@strangequark i love the "If the site helps, please donate to UNICEF" instead of "like and subscribe"
@strangequark always a great resource. He really deserves more credit.
@strangequark Oh wow, this website is amazing. Thanks so much for sharing! ๐Ÿ˜ป
@strangequark I still use this *all of the time*! Itโ€™s so great.
@strangequark The .htm extensions. Probably no CMS, just FTP. It's a thing of beauty!
Very useful when I was planning and booking a big train trip.
That non-corporate feel probably makes it more trustworthy. The info feels unified in a way that any given train company's info will never be, and one of his most useful sections is where he explains the quirks and workarounds of various corporate train booking websites!
@strangequark I love this site. Used it a couple of times for London to Turin by train. Worked brilliantly.
@strangequark heโ€™s also (historically) been on Mastodon: @seatsixtyone

@strangequark It is without a doubt the best website on the whole internet.

I recently did a train trip from London to Riga and back. I honestly don't think I would have attempted it without the great advice on that website.

@strangequark Mmm... I get this when I try to open that site.
@strangequark
I don't travel much, but I love #Seat61 just for the daydreams.

@strangequark

I had forgotten about this site!

It was incredibly useful when planning my Newcastle to Beijing train trip back in 2015.

Glad it's still up and helping others.

@strangequark I'm sure we could give him or her a peerage. It would considerably raise the quality of the recent ones, and probably be the most useful input to transport policy in a decade.

@seatsixtyone

@strangequark indeed it's a terrific resource that I've used!
@strangequark And not only Europe -- it was the only site (at least in languages I understand) with info on the night train from Basra to Baghdad, and the fediverse was helpful in finding it.
@strangequark There was a restaurant next to a particular German railway station that I fondly remembered going to in 2013. (On holiday from Australia). Best schnitzel ever, but my sample size is low. When I wanted to find out more about this restaurant 10 years later, there was The Man in Seat 61, reviewing it positively.
@strangequark @Pkbwood He was diligent enough to be a straight man in an elaborate gag about trains versus cars โ€ฆ played it straight down the line
@strangequark we found his website to be super helpful last year in Europe.
@strangequark
Yes, so good! Thanks to @seatsixtyone I knew I could get a railpass in Japan and I think I also used it for our trip from Alexandria to Assuan in Egypt. Always the first place to check for train travel!
@strangequark one of my favourite websites. Always checked when travelling!

@strangequark To me it's an impressive proof that even on a planet with billions of people, you can still become the world expert on something that everyone has access to simply by keeping at it.

I've thought of doing similar for European ferries, I've never found an equivalent site for that.

@strangequark Very useful for planning a trip to Disney on the Eurostar with our autistic daughter, allowing us to plan ahead and knowing what to expect!
@strangequark I've used #Seat61 to plan my most memorable train journeys, including a 1 month trip from Berlin to Istanbul stopping at all the capital cities on the way.

@strangequark He is definitly trying to sell me something:
- Anker Powerbank
- Express VPN
- Curve Credit Card

and

- Train Tickets all over the World :3

Such a great quirk of the internet and humanity. Fond memories.
@strangequark We are using it right now! Super helpful
@strangequark It's a wonderful resource, one I've used countless times. I hope @seatsixtyone knows how much his efforts are appreciated!
@strangequark amazing website. Used it many many times. Thank-you @seatsixtyone !!
