Just past the seven minute mark in "Say hello to the new look of app icons" they actually highlight the new Preview icon as an improvement.

I wanted to believe that this change was due to painful schedule, or lack of resources, or evolving specs.

But no. The design team is **proud** of this change. Enough to call attention to their work in the video.

This whole thing just makes me sad.

@isaiah It's… not bad?

@mackuba it's not a terrible illustration.

but it is unquestionably bland. quite blurry. and by simply deconstructing the original icon, without regard to the underlying metaphor, it really loses its meaning.

you and i know what that means because it's similar to the previous one we know -- a photographer's lupe.

but by eliminating the photo and simplifying the illustration, is it identifiable to a new user?

and without the photo does it have the same meaning?

i don't think so.

@isaiah @mackuba I actually laughed out loud when they got to that part in the video. Not trying to be mean but… this icon could be SO much better.

@gedeonm @mackuba i stopped the video right there. i was DONE.

but it makes me feel better we had a similar reaction.

@isaiah @gedeonm BRING BACK THIS KID
@Eggfreckles @isaiah @gedeonm That kid is in his 40s
@huwr @isaiah @gedeonm and I bet he still looks better than liquid glass.
@Eggfreckles @isaiah @gedeonm I bet he has a really handsome beard
