Ah yes, the Secretary of Education would like to *learn* about one of the worst racial massacres in U.S. history. Inspiring stuff.
@georgetakei yea incompetency! Why not just hand the keys to Putin like the GOP wants and get it over with
@georgetakei thats why they are trying to rewrite it, they dont know it to start with, so they figure if they rewrite it, then noone else will know it either, and they wont look so stupid about repeating it.
@georgetakei Ignorant and uncultured, like so much of America.
@georgetakei This is an indictment of her but also of our culture and educational system. (Full disclosure, I didn't learn about Tulsa at school either.)
@giantspecks
They never taught it so we never learned it. But there also weren't any laws saying that if some white kid ended up feeling bad after learning about something then that information could just be banned. This is what they want. To not allow learning that in any way makes any white person ever feel bad in any way...
@georgetakei I'm from #Tulsa & I was just smh...
@[email protected] I think we Canadians learn more about American history than Americans do... And that's sad.

@georgetakei I can't ding her too hard for this - I also did not learn of the massacre until the last couple of decades.

I wonder how many in the UK have never heard of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre?

Or, for that matter, I suspect most Americans have forgotten the Sixteenth Street Baptist church bombing, aka "Birmingham Sunday". The anniversary of that sad event is coming up on September 15 and is the subject of a great song by Richard Farina:

@georgetakei
It’s one thing not to learn anything about the world, but not to learn anything about your own country? That’s disgusting!
@caspercdn @georgetakei Republicans believe it is "unpatriotic" to teach harsh truths about your country
@jack_of_sandwich @georgetakei
Yeah, but at least learn about it. I may have not been taught some things in school, but learning goes on afterwards.
@georgetakei To be fair, most of us didn't learn about it until Watchmen(2019) made it commonly known. A damning indictment of our country.
@georgetakei "I'd like to look into it" gives lowkey vibes of "Sounds like a good time, should we do it again?"
@georgetakei the look of contempt on Congresswoman Lee's face....
@georgetakei i am in Canada and I've learned about this - perhaps not in a k-12 classroom. but by being alive and interested in the world ....
@georgetakei We heard about Tulsa in history class when we went through the general race issues topics. Germany, early 90s. Sad to see (once again) that we were taught more about US history than US students.
