Best wishes to your new career direction! I’m sure that took a lot of courage to make such a big change. 🙏
@TimKStanton
Thank you, Tim! And yes, that's true. I decided to quit during the sabbatical, but that decision alone wasn't easy at the time. Such a process is always associated with ups and downs. But it's also exciting and satisfying to keep going and developing. I think there is always more to come, but the current situation and state of mind are very good.
@theappletree @TimKStanton Good to hear your new direction is going well :)
@cohanf @TimKStanton Thank you so much Cohan!🙏🏽🌱
@theappletree @TimKStanton with a side note to say: it is terrible that our schools (governments funding them) do not make a real effort to make them positive places for encouraging young minds-- and how can you really do that when the professionals entrusted with those minds are not given proper support and manageable work loads? :(
@cohanf @TimKStanton To be fair, the Berlin school authorities are trying to do some good things - many different schools with different specialisms, good public schools for all children, no school fees, free lunches... But society is ageing, the idea of performance remains, especially the lack of staff. And in a city like Berlin, you find the problems of the world like under a burning glass. Despite this, many (ex-)colleagues continue to do a great job for as long as they can.
@theappletree @TimKStanton -'especially lack of staff.' that's the worst of it-- or as here in Alberta, probably many places in Canada- with rapid population increase, there simply aren't enough/large enough schools, nevermind enough staff for them!
@cohanf @TimKStanton What often bothered me was the lack of will to change. The system is sluggish & never reacts quickly enough to necessary requirements. If there aren't enough teachers for a lot of children without sufficient language skills, you have to take the pressure off, give them more time, remove content, shift the focus. But that only happens in rare lucky cases. As a teacher, you are forced to do pointless things, because they have always been done that way.
