I'm pleased to see the UK government are starting to recognise that we need to beef up our defence capabilities.

Sure, we'd all rather spend money on things other than defence, but in the current unstable geopolitical situation, we don't have a choice. Having strong military forces isn't a nice-to-have right now, it's a necessity.

... talking about maybe ramping up spending in 10 years time really doesn't cut it. I don't think the government has grasped the urgency of the situation.

Military threats are not some future hypothetical, they are a reality. A hostile foreign power is invading Europe RIGHT NOW, not in 10 years' time.

Sure, the Ukrainians are doing a brilliant job of defending Europe for now, but what if The Rapist throws Ukraine under a bus and they don't succeed?

@statsguy Not sure expensive boys toys are a key part of an island's defence strategy. Ships and aircraft, plenty of them, to move people around, and people are the key components of any defence strategy. it seems the UK wants lots of big bangs dependent on another country's OK to use and is happy to have no people to run, repair and service those things. Modern tech goes wrong frequently, When someone throws a missile or two into them.
@epistatacadam Yeah. Just spending the money is one thing. Spending it wisely is quite another.
