Finland Didn't End Homelessness With Magic.

They Just Didn't Treat It Like a Business Plan.

You can still run a café. Start a band. Sell socks online. Capitalism still works in Finland.

But they decided that housing people didn't need to turn a profit.

Because sometimes, the moral thing is the practical thing. And no one thrives when their neighbour is sleeping in a tent by the river.

You can't KPI your way out of a crisis. Sometimes, you just have to give a damn.

Homelessness rises in Finland for first time in over a decade

The number of homeless people in Finland has increased for the first time in 11 years, according to new data from ARA, the Finnish Housing Finance and Development Centre. The report shows that 3,806 people were experiencing homelessness in 2024, an increase of 377 compared to the previous year. The rise comes after more than a decade of steady declines and raises concerns about the country’s long-standing success in tackling homelessness.

@EdCates @crk5 @undefined_variable “so many people end up homeless that services simply cannot keep up,” said Ojankoski.

According to the ARA report, rising rents, cuts to social benefits, and reductions in funding for housing advice services are key drivers behind the increase in homelessness.”

Fi is that pendulum between communist / capitalist values. Is the idea of housing dead in the publics mind; Or is it some kind of political opportunism?

@peterrenshaw @EdCates @crk5 Basically it's the Finnish Project 2025, just started in 2023. The government is ramming through the agenda of the monied (often literally, they get their policy papers pretty much straight from the Confederation of the Finnish Industries), dismantling the welfare state, including stealth-privatization of healthcare, huge tax cuts to the rich, austerity to the poor, rolling back civil rights, and consumer and environmental protections, the whole nine yards, except just, except wrapped in this blanket of Nordic conformity, so it's not as blatant.

@undefined_variable I remember reading the birth of Linux, “Just For Fun”. Cheap higher Ed., lots of time and a home to code over winter. What a loss for future Fins. @crk5 @EdCates
