@itsfoss Apple Music

@coreyobrien88 @itsfoss For $3 USD more expensive, you can download Cider, better than apple music for windows and mac.

It's here : cider.sh

@itsfoss A good desktop on-computer tool to do my taxes, something like T@x or WISO Steuer (Germany), which both are only available for Windows or as trunkated Android or Online-Apps, which requires me to trust their provider (and Google *shudders*) with very important and personal financial data.

@itsfoss

I would like something that worked exactly like OneNote, the version just before they ruined it by making it store things in the cloud (somebody else's computer).

@itsfoss What I relly miss is a PDM/PLM/DMS like aproach for the Filesystem. I had it in several companies and it made your life so much easier.
I would like to have all files in my home and /etc file versioned. Every change is revertable. All versions should be acessible by cli and also navive acessible from Gnome or KDE Filemanager.
Why the heck is it so complicated to get a native Version management.
Never ever bother with overwriting or change a file again.
@itsfoss
I simply need the ability to:
- get a new Version on every save
- be able to chose a release|revision|index which could not automatically be removed if storage get full
- be able to add Tags that do not disappear if I replace a file instead of change it.
@MicKet @itsfoss it's called btrfs, or rsync if you already formatted your drive as something else (timeshift is the easiest to use but I like to use snapper)
@nekomimi @itsfoss
I played around with that but every approach is difficult to configure and to use and at the end is also not fully integrated in a simple usable way into cli, Gnome and KDE.
@MicKet @itsfoss actually specifically with snapper on tumbleweed it's kinda close to what you want it, you could create a menu service to add some rollback tools to dolphin (kde's file manager)
In tumbleweed using yast you can view a list of changed files and revert them to the version you want by using a GUI
@itsfoss anything related to lab equipment: apps for controlling lab power supply, oscilloscopes, other kinds of devices… also companion apps for eeprom programmers and so on… it’s really crazy that you get that on Windows but not on Linux.

@in_sympathy

Dang, reminds me that I have wanted to build something like that for ages.
Have not even started.

@itsfoss

@in_sympathy Ya, very surprising. πŸ˜…
@itsfoss Proteus, WhatsApp Desktop, Proton Drive (i think it's coming)
@xdanep ZapZap's a decent WhatsApp client from what I've heard.
@zstg Thanks for the recommendation, I already use it but having options is always better.
@itsfoss Firmware updaters/configurators for my VKB joystick and Sena motorcycle headset.
@itsfoss The communication app Line

@itsfoss
Microsoft office. Then I wouldn't need to run a windows VM, ever.

And listen, before anyone flames me, the office apps are objectively superior in terms of ergonomics and advanced feature completeness. And they don't run well in Crossover or wine. I hate MS as much as the next linux user but i know robust software when i use it.

Alternatively an open office alternative could become amazing but nobody seems to be in a rush to hit feature parity.

@TrimTab @itsfoss

Add to "Office" a fully validated and supported implementation of "Teams" which, like "Word" - the most fundamental word of the English language & culture - MS has been abusively allowed to trademark.

Impecunious students need these applications because education authorities abusively enforce the de facto monopolies.

The situation is being aggravated by the abusive withdrawal of support for Windows 10; on the Update page in Settings, MS are TELLING users that they should be thinking of buying a new computer. Isn't this some kind of conflict of commercial interest, much worse than the enforced bundling of a navigator with an OS?

@itsfoss
What I also miss is an aoto heal ability for Grub. I'm a normal user i'm not able to handle Linux if it boot into grub emergency mode. In the last 15y i had 7 cases on two different computers where a start ended on a Grub emergency mode. And I ended in reinstall the system.
(Who the fuck invented this emergency mode should be forced to have every time a stone in his shoe if he go to wear some )
@itsfoss
The amateur radio community uses a program called Winlink. It's critical infrastructure during emergency events where commercial services may be offline. As the name implies, it's a Windows program. Amateurs with Linux based computing rely on Wine to bridge the gap. It would be nice to have a native FOSS alternative.
@Howitzer105mm That would be very useful!
@itsfoss
Notepad++ and Rufus

@GarretSidzaka @itsfoss Notepadqq was recently updated, so we're good on that front. And you can just create an ISO image through most Linux operating systems.

Both seem to be covered.

@mrgrumpymonkey @itsfoss
That's good on qq, but frankly Rufus actually saves me a bunch of steps and I can just pop out installers or test media and even apply tweaks to windows and Linux install USB
Still nothing quite like it

@itsfoss I miss a #virtualFS (#openvfs)approach like nextcloud, dropbox and onedrive use on Windows. In best case it is independet usable on all kind of network storage like sftp, nfs or smb.
I miss,
- the possibility to have auto cached network files
- the possibility to have some files or directory permanently in sync

I hate it that a linux laptop even with VPN is not able to stay connected to a network folder especialy if you work with hibernation.

@MicKet @itsfoss
NextCloud perfectly integrates into Linux. It even works out of the box for some DEs (e.g. Gnome).
Otherwise rclone or rsync can do the job.
@MicKet @itsfoss Have a look at Tresorit, it's got native Linux sync and virtual file system (although it only has Windows-level file names and attributes, so case-folded, no understanding of symlinks, no storage of modes and attributes, no atime or mtime.)
@PhilSalkie @itsfoss is the Software #foss?
@MicKet @itsfoss No, it's a cloud service provider like Google Drive, with clients for Browser, Windows, Linux, Mac, Android, and iPhone. Encryption at rest and in transit, so don't lose your password.
@itsfoss Motorola/Lenovo Smart Control and a miracast streaming service
@itsfoss Cubase and FL-Studio. Including all VSTi's.
I know there are good alternatives like LMMS, but it's still limited in functionality.
@heartcode_dev @itsfoss Cubase would be awesome! It's the only reason why I'm still running Windows at all.
Have you heard about any efforts to compile it for Linux lately?
@heartcode_dev @itsfoss I switched to Bitwig because I wanted to stay on Linux and I love it :)
@sainteckes @itsfoss that's incredible. Thanks for the suggestion. Even developed in Germany. Will try that for sure πŸ”₯
@itsfoss

Photoshop.

I do not use Photoshop. I do not know anyone who uses Photoshop. But there is always -- ALWAYS -- Someone, who almost seems trollish and seeks out pro-Linux conventions, just to remind everyone that Photoshop is an evil corporation, that they refuse to abandon, while making someone else rich. And if you ask them what specific thing about Photoshop they like, that could possibly not be found elsewhere, they never respond.
πŸ™„

At this point, I either want Photoshop to die a painful death, or create a Linux build.
πŸ˜†

@Linux @itsfoss

<if you ask them what specific thing about Photoshop they like, that could possibly not be found elsewhere, they never respond.>

You gradually become at ease with programs like that, but only over quite a long period. By then you may be too old to change easily. I still have the cheap Photoshop Elements 2018; I've also used the current Gimp, but there are so many things to look up each time...

Likewise, if you do coding you don't want to change from Notepad++, whether or not you have built up a collection of macros.

@itsfoss
Old standalone Adobe products before it went all subscription.
@itsfoss
I'm missing a launcher in the style of an android home screen (maybe rather an extension than an app)
@itsfoss A friendly, portable #Pascal compiler.
@itsfoss not an app but I wish there was a canon TS3640 driver for Tumbleweed
@itsfoss A useable Teams Client. S-Plan. The KNX Engineering Tool Software. My Bookkeeping Software. WISO Steuer. WISO Mein Geld. Starmoney.
@itsfoss zoom and VooV
@robriley @itsfoss what do you mean? Isn't Zoom currently available for Linux?
@itsfoss Capture one (image editing). But I have yet to test out the new gimp, maybe it does most of what I need
@itsfoss Proprietary laser cutter software (like RDWorks) and access control software (like Visionis Titan VSAccess)
@itsfoss RDWorks to control the lasercutter in my Makerspace.
@itsfoss ResophNotes, and also WinCatalog, and last but not least, a version of Recall that doesn't commucate with any mothership thank you very much :-)
