A bygone era at the local Walgreens (June 2013).

You see, kids, before streaming services had taken over, people had to leave their homes to rent movies. Those were hard times. #ThrowbackThursday #OlympusStylusZoom80 #BelieveInFilm

@analogfusion Yes, I remember the days of the Redbox lines, when people had to wait whole minutes for a limited supply of new releases.
@colorblindcowboy I think I rented one, maybe two videos there. It was relatively recently that I realized the machines were gone, and I don't know when they pulled them.
@analogfusion @colorblindcowboy I used them a lot before the pandemic. afterwards movie selection decreased but so has physical media releases. I used them in tandem with my public library. I used it because I wanted "New Releases" every once in a while and often get cheap promo prices.

@tkmedia @colorblindcowboy Hopefully libraries will continue to carry physical discs for a long time to come. It's likely digital distribution will become the sole option at some point.

Why sell copies when you can get customers to pay for perpetual subscription$?

@analogfusion @colorblindcowboy ive been saving streaming stuff on hard drive and sometimes disc. As often there is no disc ever available. I have original streaming only tv shows that was not popular but was removed for a tax write off and unavailable anywhere. 🏴‍☠️
@tkmedia @colorblindcowboy I'm not hung up on using optical media, but I do want to have local copies in some form of the things I like.
@analogfusion @colorblindcowboy just using them as backup copies of stuff already on my media server. Im actually starting to mess around digitizing with telecine film.
@tkmedia @colorblindcowboy I buy audio CDs and rip them all to FLAC. But I like having that physical copy to fall back on.

@analogfusion @tkmedia I have a rule that during work hours, I can stream from Apple Music. It’s easier and whatnot in my office. But at night or weekends, on my real stereo, it’s CD or vinyl.

It’s obstinacy on my part, sure, and a reaction to 21st century convenience listening. But it’s my rule and I like it.

@colorblindcowboy @tkmedia I'm not about to tell you your rule is wrong. 😅

I'm not opposed to all streaming, although it's not my thing. I'm just always thinking about what can be taken away from consumers if the company behind it decides not to carry what we enjoy.

@analogfusion @tkmedia For sure. I did just order a (likely pirated) DVD from ebay of a film that for some stupid reason is not available in the US. Probably some song on the soundtrack isn’t cleared for US distribution.

I get angry when laws and economics prevent us from experiencing art.

@colorblindcowboy @tkmedia Those kinds of international restrictions can seem really arbitrary.
@analogfusion @colorblindcowboy seems to happen a lot with international coproductions.
@tkmedia @analogfusion Which seems ironic.
@colorblindcowboy @analogfusion most common thing that happens with coproductions is that one side gets absorbed /bought into another company and depending on terms dont want to bother a possible renegotiation for half the rights for a particular regions release.
@tkmedia @analogfusion I just shake my head (and order my Korean DVD of a Finish movie).
