#3GoodThings (about literature)

1. My students really enjoyed William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," & we had a great time talking about it (& one student even knew the Zombies song named after the story; we all listened to it & had a good laugh).

2. A student from my first-year comp. class won a writing award for her essay on Edgar Allan Poe's "The House of Usher."

3. A student who is writing a thesis under my direction won a writing award for her essay on Rachel Cusk's Outline.

@CindyWeinstein We had to read "Emily" in twelfth grade. I'm still a bit traumatized by it, decades later. I got a shudder when I read your post. 😬

@chardlee

I didn't mean to trigger you! The story is definitely southern gothic but my students found its perversity (and macabre content) weirdly funny.

@CindyWeinstein oh, I get the funny aspect. I actually *like* the story, and it's great writing. But also, ick. I wouldn't say I was triggered per se, but there's always a lasting ick when I think about it.

This is why literature works, eh?
