Alberta to change rules to ensure books in schools are 'age-appropriate' | CBC News

Alberta is bringing in new rules this fall to ensure that only what it calls "age-appropriate" books are available in school libraries.

@mercedesallen Seems to be focused on explicitly sexual content, but lets see how this plays out.
@KitsuneVixi @mercedesallen they aren't showing porno mags in school libraries, so... it isn't that, it's the same thing they do everywhere else this comes up. they act like theres something objectionable and people go along with it, at the expense of the kids' access to literature
@caitp @mercedesallen There was a mention that a book depicted oral sex.
And they said they didn't think it would see 2SLGBTQ+ (There's a 2S now?) specific content prohibited.
@KitsuneVixi @mercedesallen I saw, but that does not pornography make. they covered oral sex in our middle school sex ed courses, and lets be real, a lot of kids have their first experiences that young. Not saying that's good, or a recipe for healthy living, but we know it happens.
@caitp @mercedesallen Those courses were with adult supervision and middle school is 13-14 years old isn't it?
@KitsuneVixi @mercedesallen sure, but they have those courses, because they know kids are doing hand stuff, mouth stuff, and more. they know teen pregnancy is not uncommon.. they can see the hpv on that kid's face. it's taught for a reason.. but it mostly covers (at least in my experience) physical health, there wasn't a lot of mental or emotional support as I recall
@KitsuneVixi @mercedesallen for that reason, access to media that covers it sensitively rather than exploiting it, can be helpful as a frame of reference for one's experiences. If you're that kid, you might not feel you can talk to parents about it, or even necessarily your friends or teachers, but a book can't judge you

@mercedesallen

And who gets to make the decisions?
