I am still amazed at how few people seem to really understand that clinical level denial is regularly hard at work in people who abuse. It does not seem to matter whether the abuse is perpetrated militarily, capitalistically, through other means, or personally. Abusers go into denial about their actions. DARVO is real.

Denial is also helped along by bunch of related defense mechanisms, such as: tons of deflection, minimization, whataboutism, false equivalences etc.
