Swiss surveillance could become worse than US

If passed, Swiss chat, email & VPN providers must:

🚨 Log IP addresses
🚨 Ask for ID upon sign up
🚨 Decrypt data upon request

Switzerland plans surveillance worse than US | Tuta

Revision of Swiss surveillance law VÜPF would directly target VPN & encrypted chat and email providers based in Switzerland.

@Tutanota @protonprivacy Looking forward to your take on this 😬

@stilvoid @Tutanota @protonprivacy
i don't have a source at the moment.

proton leaves switzerland if laws (or decrees, ordinances) passed.

@stilvoid @protonprivacy @Tutanota @zetabeta this happening when I just migrated to Proton Mail… smh
@zetabeta @stilvoid @Tutanota @protonprivacy Best move for them, but if that happened, where would they go? Switzerland is the place with best privacy laws by now afaik.

@stilvoid @Tutanota @protonprivacy no because Proton left Mastodon a while ago.

Really curious to see what they will do once their principal marketing driver will be gone.

@alebaffa @stilvoid @Tutanota @protonprivacy theyve already made statements about moving countries of operation.
@Tutanota God I hate this stupid timeline.
@Tutanota Well shit. Completely unrelated question; when can we expect TutaVPN? 😅
@protonprivacy will lose all of if not most of there marketing material if this where to pass. It will also be a huge loss in privacy across the board.
Proton's CEO said they will leave Switzerland if this took place.
Well, the trick problem is - where can they go?

Also, if EU follows the stupid idea, their companies will lose lots of users, since privacy fans tended to choose European alternative.
Once the alternatives are not privacy-friendly, people are likely shift back to US ones.
@Ibi I think the only place left to go would be Iceland. Which would be both difficult and doesn't have the necessary infrastructure, I'm guessing to handle that.
@Tutanota OK, but just after they get rid of their Swiss banking secrecy /s
Switzerland - A Haven for Russian Money?

Despite sanctions against Russia, asset managers are said to have hidden money belonging to Putin‘s confidants. This documentary follows the trail of shadow bankers and high-ranking Russian officials to Switzerland.

@laureano Correct. It's just a big clickbait about something old that had not the slightest chance to get through. Sure, we also have here those democracy hostile forces (mainly far right, who would have thought) but they are still under reasonable control.
@Tutanota god fucking DAMNIT switzerland
@Tutanota Oh how selfless that Tuta is reporting about what's going on in a small Alpine country.

@bhaug @Tutanota

Is "small" implying inconsequential?

@FrozenPeach @Tutanota no, but, coincidence has it that the biggest competitor of Tuta, is directly affected and their custumers might be prone to look fore 'another provider'. So this reporting is really selfless, right. Tuta surely reports also on privacy crackdowns in Myanmar, Ethiopia, Argentina... right? RIGHT?
I am not a Proton fanboy, quite the opposite...
@Tutanota Won't happen. Greetings from Switzerland.
@Tutanota Well sh1t, I'm in the process of moving a bunch of business accounts from Google Apps to @protonprivacy .
I'm pretty sure that's not happening now.
@Tutanota Is there no safe haven ?
@Tutanota do people not realize proton left mastodon?

@Tutanota You‘re posting this at 22nd May and are a little bit behind:

> There was hardly any positive feedback
> All major parties and numerous associations clearly rejected the plan.

https://www.inside-it.ch/vupf-revision-faellt-in-der-vernehmlassung-komplett-durch-20250507

With such a negative feedback and a rejection from all parties from left to right (this is rare in CH), that revision is unlikely to pass.
Many CH organisations and companies are fighting against it, and Proton will leave Switzerland if it does somehow pass:

@Tutanota I self host my email server shall I be woried :D
@Tutanota I definitely disagree with all of that. But how it makes sense, that I, as a local Internet Service Provider (in Czech republic), must do that - and VPN provider don't? It makes sense to allow anonymous access for all internet service providers - not only for VPN providers...
Good to know, @Tutanota 😅 My migration from proton services started just yesterday
