The European EFTA Court in Luxembourg today confirmed that it is illegal to approve new oil and gas fields without assessing the climate impacts of the emissions that occur when the oil is burned, in a case brought by Natur og Ungdom and @greenpeace.no

The Court confirmed that under European Union/European Economic Area law, new fossil fuel projects climate assessments must include not only emissions produced at the drilling site, but also those resulting from the subsequent combustion of the extracted oil and gas, wherever it takes place.
