@draken @SmudgeTheInsultCat just a couple of hours ago I ordered a new drive to start moving my 5-years old Win10 machine to #Lubuntu.
It's funny 'cause this 5-years old Win10 machine used to be a #SmartOS machine for 3 years before Win10 - and it's still working great.
I remember why I installed Win10 back then, so no regrets, but I've had my fun and it's time now to go with something serious yet again.

I think there's a preference to default to saving locally, but Microsoft sure doesn't make it easy to find.

@VATVSLPR
Why? Isn't there a file manager anymore where you can create folders on your hard drive and save your documents? ๐Ÿค“

@werawelt @SmudgeTheInsultCat
There is still a file browser so you can save where you want, but it defaults to saving to OneDrive rather than locally. Unless you dig into the menus to change the defaults (File->Options->Save->Save to Computer by default) you will always have to waste some time telling it to save in your preferred location. It's not the end of the world, but it's a regular annoyance.

@VATVSLPR
I understand.
Going into the settings and customizing the operating system to your liking (which isn't difficult) seems as out of the question for many users as correctly adjusting the rearview and side mirrors seems out of the question for a novice driver.
It would be good if there were something like a PC driver's license for some people.

Configuring things to your liking only works if you know how or are willing to spend some time figuring it out. That's made unreasonably hard when Microsoft puts the configuration somewhere non-obvious and does nothing to educate users that it even exists. They clearly want users to use OneDrive rather than the hard drive, and they're using their control over the UI to push users that way.
@werawelt @SmudgeTheInsultCat
In Microsoft's defense, there are possibly valid reasons to push users to use OneDrive. It protects their data against failed hard drives, corruption, and accidental deletion, makes it accessible wherever they have an Internet connection, and makes it easy to share. I bet Microsoft has lower support costs when people store their data in the cloud. But that's not a good enough reason to make it extra difficult to store data locally.
@VATVSLPR
The day will maybe come, when MS make a trainee for their KI with all the data... like Meta soon.
It is never good to be dependent by a big tech concern.
Independence and self-determination are important and should also play a role in choosing the right operating system. For me I use Linux since 2008. At work I must use MS. But my way to my datas is only with the file manager.
@SmudgeTheInsultCat
@SmudgeTheInsultCat so glad I don't have windows any more on my computer, unless the Linux penguins start being like Microcrap
@SmudgeTheInsultCat I used to save a few important files to OneDrive. Then suddenly one day Windows 11 uploaded *all* my files to OneDrive, maxing out my storage allotment and locking me out. I have never seen those files since.
