Everyone believes disability will never happen to them. They will be the exception.

They tell themselves disabled people are faking, not trying hard enough or don’t really want to get better.

They will twist themselves into knots to avoid facing the reality that most people will become disabled at some point in their lives.

Engaging in disability justice helps people like me, but it will also help your future self.

It’s time.

@broadwaybabyto as someone diagnosed in my early forties with MS I can attest to this

@devorars

Plus they will tell you. I literally had to endure this drive-by insult by a "friend".

"Yeah, this couldn't happen to me because of my character, but I wish you the best."

@broadwaybabyto

@snarkweek @devorars @broadwaybabyto wow that's a dumb comment. unless your friend plans to die very young as with age a possibility to develop a chronic condition is getting more likely regardless of one's character.
@peakfriktion @snarkweek @devorars @broadwaybabyto "my defining character traits are 'YOLO,' 'live fast and die young,' and 'i'm here for a good time, not a long time,' so i won't be around to see myself become disabled!" Lmao
@snarkweek @devorars ugh I’m so sorry. Way too many people see it as a moral failing or character flaw. Sigh.
@broadwaybabyto disability comes to nearly everybody at some point of their lives or to their loved ones, even if it’s not permanent. People are shockingly myopic (not a pun)
@broadwaybabyto
Placard text:
"YOU TOO WILL BECOME DISABLED...
IF YOU LIVE THAT LONG"
@broadwaybabyto it’s not something to be wished on anyone and requires vast amounts of support to even come to grips with (if that’s possible). But living with it requires a daily dose of courage and patience (for others and yourselves)

@broadwaybabyto Oh, it's well past time.

I don't think the deniers realize how much people hide or work around their disabilities. See also "but you don't look disabled"/"you're too young for that".

@broadwaybabyto Agreed.

If one manages to live long enough, their mind and/or body will begin to fail. Few exceptions to that and none are preferable.

@broadwaybabyto I had a sister who was a physician, who died of brain cancer. At her memorial service, which was attended largely by physicians, her supervisor made a remark I'll never forget: "The distinction between doctor and patient is temporary at best."
@broadwaybabyto This is why President Trump and his Administration are gutting healthcare, cancer research, etc. They WANT to kill people who can’t work without help. It’s understandable from their POV. It’s expensive to help people who can’t help themselves. Look at Trump. He’s extremely old & infirm, but he can still help himself to our tax dollars.
