Voted today. Let's go, Romania! đŸ‡·đŸ‡ŽđŸ‡ȘđŸ‡ș - Lemmy.World

I literally have friends who immigrated to the Netherlands and then complained that “all these emigrants ruined the Netherlands”
 I was blown away

A Florida native once wrote that that the people who most want to stop Florida overdevelopment are the ones who brought their house last week.
Almost 60% of Cuban-Americans voted for Trump, the second time

Do we know why? I have a friend who is Cuban and voted for Trump, but my reason for him is lack of education. What about everyone else?

I grew up with the kids of the original set of Cuban refugees and thought it was because they were the rich people fleeing Castro. So they were already aligned with the right here, they like the idea of being on the upper side of a class divide.

The newer ones may just be anti -abortion, there are a lot of those “single issue voters” everywhere not just here.

It is amazing how the single issue voters choose the party that blatantly lies about their single issue.
Additionally there are a lot of people who choose to remain ignorant about Batista. A communist revolution overthrowing an objectively brutal regime really gets the right wingers on the defensive.

Because this image is burned into their minds whenever they think of Democrats. This happened under Clinton.

EliĂĄn GonzĂĄlez - Wikipedia

This, Janet Reno did more to help the Republicans than any actual Republican.
He was from Cuba, his father was in Cuba, his uncle was in the USA and wanted to keep him here. He needed to be returned to his father but it should’ve been via negotiation. The raid was not the way to go. IIRC Janet Reno just got impatient with diplomacy?
they make the jump that the left = communism and that they’ve already lived

Have they seen how far right our left is?

I would vote for communism or most socialism either, but our left really has to move back to the left

they do not care. these are convictions set by scars making them easily swayed to alt-right talking points
Castro is still winning

Opposing overdevelopment =/= Hating refugees.

Is this “Florida native” in the real estate industry or just brainwashed by them?

I’m pretty sure that anyone who believes in the ongoing climate catastrophe is rationally opposed to overdevelopment, especially in Florida ffs.

To Florida, overdevelopment is not about protecting wetlands or beaches. In Florida when someone talks about over development they are referring to all the new people moving there.

The other person’s comment is about how the snow bird that bought their house last week is complaining about the snow bird that just bought the neighbors house.

I used to live in Florida for 33 years.

It’s the same logic as Latinos who’ve been in the US wanting to pull up the ladder and get rid of the new Latinos.

John D. MacDonald

I’m pretty sure it’s from this novel, but I could be wrong.

MacDonald was talking about the environment long before the first Earth Day.

Is your friend the current minister of the justice department? Because that sounds a lot like her.
I live in Denmark, I’m a “non-EU” person, but I’m here based on my skilled work. I do stuff, I am useful. So I have nothing against immigration in general, only against the part of immigration walking around malls in their slippers at 1 p.m., because they still haven’t spent all the money they got by faking disability.
It has nothing to do with immigration, the native citizens can do this all the same, and some probably do.
This is a good time to remind everyone that not all disabilities are visible.
Also that personality disorders look “normal” when societies encourage, promote, and reward personality disorders.

How do you know they take disability?

How do we know you are not faking being skilled?

Moreover: even if they were disabled: does that somehow forbid them from buying things at the mall? Would it be different if they had different footwear? Are disability payments even enough for them to be able to afford to spend on frivolous things? Even if they are, is being disabled a good reason to forbid someone from buying frivolous things? If they’re buying necessities, isn’t it nicer for everyone else if the people who have the time to do their groceries outside rush hours do so then so the registers are less crowded?
It’s just there are two distinct froups of people outside during the working hours: the slipper guys, and pensioners
And also just maybe the people that don’t work 9-5. You realize that right? Or does everyone in your country stop working at 5pm?
Yeah seriously. Whenever I do a late or a night shift, this guy will think I’m a leeching immigrant. Or maybe he won’t, because my skin isn’t the right color for that?
I sometimes wondered if the factories used by Xiaomi (and those used by their target audience) shut down at night, as their early Mi Bands didn’t permit night shift configurations.

I’m working, I’m delivering what I have to, and I getting paid for it. For two years at the current workplace. As it is not a charity, I’m pretty sure I would be fired otherwise.
As for the guys in slippers - I don’t know about single one of them, but you know, when you:

  • go out of the office and see a lot of similar-looking guys with beards, wearing tracksuits and slippers, doing fuck all, seemingly all the time, or maybe they work in shifts
  • the statistic showing that the number of disabled adult middle aged “refugees” is double-digit higher that the same number for Danes
, you start thinking there could be a correlation.
One final question, you work in tech right?
Why does it matter how they look? Is it because your underlying issue is racism?

the statistic showing that the number of disabled adult middle aged “refugees” is double-digit higher that the same number for Danes

You know refugees aren’t a random sample of the population, right? Why tf wouldn’t there be more refugees from war zones, gang violence, etc with disabilities compared to some random Eestern European country with a population that for the most part deals with none of that? What brain trust managed to convince you that the only way to be a refugee is to like, win an Olympic sprint or something?

Dichotomous logic is a sign of ignorant stupidity. Nothing about real disability is binary. Such a view is as murderous in the real world as were Nazi SS working in a concentration camp.

I would know. I am physically disabled, appear functional, but suffer far more than you could ever know. In the next decade I will die on a cold rainy night in a gutter somewhere after my folks die and I am homeless. I was killed 11 years ago, but I get to die slowly for 2 decades. I did nothing wrong. I just rode a bicycle to work and encountered a very stupid person driving into another at an unfortunate time that then hit me. It only takes one bad day to be exactly where I am. If you do not care about the social safety net for people like me, you deserve to learn the hard way.

So basically you just like to shit on less fortunate people. Class act.
I talk shit about “not doing shit” people
Whatever you tell yourself to sleep at night. I am disgusted by your attitude.

I do stuff, I am useful.

So go do stuff and stop trying to control what other people do in their days off.

Is your friend white while complaining about non-white emigrants?
Well that depends on who you ask of course, white is not a constant, but if you ask them, yes.
If a racist says you’re not white, they’ll kill you over your protests. They may even pretend to think you’re white up until you’re useless to them.
They aren’t anti-immigration, they’re racist.
How did you know?!?!?

I’m a descendant of immigrants in the Netherlands and there is definitely a small subset of 2nd and 3rd gen immigrants who is ruining it for all immigrants. PVV would have never been voted in as the biggest party if their parents (who never bothered to integrate and to learn the language) weren’t given permanent residency.

30 years ago people who pointed out the problems these non integrated migrants could cause in the future were labeled racists by the left wing parties at the time, even though the leader of the socialist party warned about this. The labor party who was in power at the time also didn’t bother to tackle this issue, since they relied on the immigrant vote. And now since the Muslims started their own center right conservative party, labor lost a big voting block and the fascists are in power because people have had it with the inaction of the labor party.

Same thing is happening with the refugees. The illegals who have zero chance to get a refugee status and who are committing crimes have soured people towards the real refugees. Towns that were once welcoming towards refugees want to see the refugee center in their town gone.

Same thing is happening with the refugees.

Yes they are being used as a straw man to scare and polarize people.

The illegals who have zero chance to get a refugee status and who are committing crimes have soured people’s attitudes towards the real refugees.

And it is working.

Are you familiar with the situation in the Netherlands? Because points OP raises are not really polarizing in the Netherlands. Maybe you’re for example misunderstanding the phrase ‘The illegals who have zero chance to get a refugee status’ ?
Very common to hear this. I’ve heard family that were complaining that male only, illegal immigrants are moving in to steal jobs, when they were exactly in the same situation, just on the other side, some 20 years ago. It honestly shakes my hope in humanity.
Western expats in Japan are notorious for hating every other Western expat in Japan. It’s even got a name, “My Japan Syndrome”.

I had managed to keep myself entertained this morning and not fret about this but... yeah, nope, there you are, anxiety, I guess you didn't go far.

Here's hoping that a bunch of Romanians woke up a little. With how low participation typically is people could figure this out if they could get over their whole "politicians are just thieves" deal for five minutes for anything but supporting Russian nazis.

I'm gonna go see if I can get myself distracted again. Good luck to everybody voting today.

“All politicians are the same” they say while always voting for the two same parties that happen to be the closest on the political spectrum.
I have little knowledge of Romanian politics, but it does seem that in this presidential race, Nicușor Dan does have some serious track record from his time as mayor of Bucharest.
Yes, but the propaganda says that he’s backed by “the system”, so it doesn’t matter. He’s still a conservative and has his issues, but he does seem to want to do good things and work to solve some of the corruption issues. We shall see what he can do.
Not only always voting within the two same parties, but actively voting for the worse of the two. Which is typically how things go here in Canada too.
only two parties? But the liberal party in Canada was elected after making promises to pass electoral reform! Surely they wouldn’t break their promise so you have to vote for them right?
They wanted to implement a system where they would always have been people’s first or second choice so they would have ended up winning every time
Well, sadly the alternative Conservatives are still the worse option despite the lack of kept promises from the Liberals. And depending on your specific running unfortunately sometimes the only option you have is to vote Liberal to attempt to unseat that ridings conservative. Or just not vote at all, which also just results in a conservative win. At least it’s a different guy at the helm this time I guess. We’ll see if that makes a difference.

Nostalgia for being oppressed is in full force.

“Ștefan Șerban, 69, sitting on a bench with his friend Nicolae Carja, 74, said life had been better under the former Communist dictator, Nicolae Ceaußescu. “We were a rich country then,” he said. “Industry, petrol, gas, goldmines. And no debt.””

Jiu Valley miners' strike of 1977 - Wikipedia

like all russian pensioners saying life was better under stalin since they could just move into an apartment of the people whose whole family was killed.
“They yearn for the mines”.
