Small associations and personal use: GnuCash is successful for annual by-cash reporting. It is a bit more complicated if you need reporting by fiscal year, i.e., by competence. However, you can definitely have a clear report of liabilities and assets which is due at the end of the period.
You can also prepare budgets and if you are a Guile (Scheme) hacker it is also highly customizable, including possibly very complicated accounting reportings.
@gisgeek thank you for your Feedback! Would you describe it as user-friendly, e.g. the user interface. (Especially if the user has no special expertise in accounting.)
@nic Well, a double-entries experience is due, but there is also a great introductory tutorial about Gnucash available. It would help having an initial schema for account organization.
I'm using GnuCash since many years for pulling my private account data (Kontoauszug) and would not recommend it:
- you need to pull each account separately even those at the same bank.
- account lines are easily changed unintentionally
- auto-detection of accounts for bank account lines works, well, not so good (Recently I discovered that one can clean the learned data, which I did - with the effect gone after just a few month)
- I did not test invoicing, etc. Maybe this part overwhelms the one I mentioned
