Achievement unlocked: I got my first disc with disc rot! See this black spot? This is the reflection layer decomposing. There are multiple smaller black dots on the surface, but I was still able to get a good dump.
@felsqualle disc rot is starting at my collection too, so far I got good dumps of almost everything but sometimes it needed a few attempts
@fuchsiii Now I am afraid to start checking all my other discs…

@felsqualle @fuchsiii yeah, you guys can thank the folks who thought it was a great idea to use the same organic binder as used in the #LaserDisc...

  • If you need optical archives, consider buying #MDISC recordables...

@kkarhan @fuchsiii To be fair: I just got the disc in, so I don't know how it was stored. It is from 1994 and one of the oldest discs I have.

Hopefully it was only a one-off... What's _really_ bad seems to be HD-DVD, there are tons of reports that they die very early.

@kkarhan @fuchsiii My CD-Rs burned 20 years ago all work, but all of my DVD-Rs are completely dead, and they are only 15 years old.

@felsqualle @fuchsiii that's because around 2010s they cheaped out with organic binder (same shit as #LaserDisc used) and decided that's good enough.

  • Consider imaging your stuff and/or using #MDISC recordables...
