In the 1980s, we did not have the internet or streaming to help us understand satanic conspiracies, but we did have books and TV.
👹 One of the horrible things that came to light was satanic messages in the scourge of society, Rock Music. When the music is played backwards on vinyl, you hear the evil messages.
This exact problem drives a plot point tonight in our feature THE GATE (1987).

A large amount of work went into the Minions SFX. 15 suits were constructed from polyfoam. Creature Designer Cook was inspired by 'Darby O'Gill and the Little People' from 1959.
Turns out the mechanisms in the suits did not work, but filmmakers liked the "fascinating, stupid fish look."

Huge sets had to be built to handle 4:1 scaling in forced perspective. In addition, the Minion actors were filmed at twice the frame rate. That's why they look herky-jerky.
When filmed to be together in the same scene, non-Minion actors had to move slowly, at half-speed. And there was no time for re-takes. First effort appeared in the final film.
Imagine building and using giant stones - or the giant leg in the hole.

The SFX team was most proud of the 'Dead Workman falls and shatters into swarm of Minions' scene. SFX specialist Cook said it had not been seen since Tex Avery cartoons.
The workman fell from being suspended from the ceiling. Shot was stopped when he hit. Minions laid on ground contorted in shapes of his body parts on ground. They would explode out in subsequent part of the scene to complete the transition.
Three scene components and two frame rates!

Homage to Harryhausen!
Glen shooting a rocket into the Demon Lord was directly lifted from 'It Came from Beneath the Sea' where a torpedo was fired into Harryhausen's giant octopus.
