I had two delightful, inspiring events this weekend. Friday night, I was a special guest at Edmonton’s annual Queer Prom, a safe, inclusive, empowering dance party and festival for #LGBQT teens. Seeing the kids in their wild costumes and gowns, dancing and singing their hearts out in defiance of hate and exclusion, filled me with joy. And Pink Pony Club is ringing in my ears. #Edmonton #yeg #TransRightsAreHumanRights
Saturday, I was a judge at the Edmonton Regional Heritage Fair, which is like a science fair for history lovers. Students from grades 4-9 presented on all kinds of stories. (I judged 5 different presentations: on the Komagata Maru tragedy, Louis Riel, Viola Desmond, Terry Fox and the history of Confederation.) So much enthusiasm and knowledge on display! #Edmonton #yeg #Canada #HeritageFair #yegheritage
The students at both Queer Prom and the Heritage Fair were a tonic for my spirits, a sign of great things to come for our city, province and country. But I was also inspired by all the many many community volunteers who made both events possible. I was so happy to share in the excitement - and to share a bit of the experience with all of you!
