I had the door apart to swap the regular flag mirror for this fancy pants remote mirror. I’m really living in the lap of luxury now! While apart I cleaned and greased my first window regulator track that turned out to be most easy. I figured out why stinky’s horn doesn’t work. It hasn’t got one! The two dangling wires in front of the oil filter clearly are what would go to a horn if it did have one. Well, today I got around to making a bracket for this silly hella multi horn thing. It was a bit of a faff. I have yet to wire it in or hook up the air tubes. I did however fix the horn ‘button’ on the stock steering wheel and at least it makes the relay click. #volkswagen #vwrabbit #vwpickup #weirdcars #weirdcarsofmastodon

Roger the Rabbit pickup has massive side mirrors. Which I think are factory?

@vwdasher they look suspiciously similar the the mirrors on my old LT35, so I’d guess they’re factory. @madrush yesterday was truely #doorsday, I spent most of it taking the panels off my Ranger (the European one), but with less to show for it, visually. However, instead of two crappy factory speakers, I now have a pair of components in the front, and a coaxial in each of the suicide doors. Makes a massive difference. I like how Ford/Mazda put all the wiring for the top spec models in the poverty spec lads, it makes upgrades easy!

@mandelbroccoli @vwdasher nice! Is the ranger in Europe largely similar to the one in the US? I have a fleet-spec Ranger and it also lacks remote mirrors. It probably also lacks door speakers, unless the previous owner threw some in. This, plus roll up windows, in 2007, makes for a hilarious level of equipment for a US market vehicle.
@madrush @vwdasher nope, for the mk1 ‘99-‘06 and mk2/2.5 facelift ‘06-‘11, it’s basically a Mazda BT-50 wearing a Ford dress. After ‘11 it all goes wrong, unreliable 2.2L engines, tons of electronics, nonsense at every turn. Mine is the last year of the decent ones, and it’s a joy to work on, well designed for maintenance and repair, and easy to upgrade with bits from high-spec models. Came with a 2.5L or 3L diesel, torquey and fun to drive, I love the thing
@mandelbroccoli @vwdasher oh this ford/mazda pickup thing is a lot more convoluted than I ever realized: “For 1994, Mazda North America ended imports of the B-series from Japan, entering into an agreement with Ford to market a rebadged version of the Ranger as the B-series in the United States and Canada.”
@madrush @vwdasher even over here parts are pretty much evenly split between those badged “Ford” and “Mazda”. I think it was an Aussie design, and generally produced in Thailand. Though it says “Duratorque” on the engine, both the 2.5 and 3.0 are Mazda lumps and completely unrelated to Ford stuff. Good engines though

@madrush the flag mirrors on Mk1s are so shit, the remote mirror is a definite upgrade. Shall see if these side mirrors are an improvement, car's still got engine out and not a roller.
