on this international workers' day, a thought for those whose labour goes largely unacknowledged, unappreciated & unpaid. here's to the carers & the cleaners & everyone else without whom the world would pretty much grind to a halt. ask iceland.

for a more thorough investigation of what i mean by this, here's a paper called 'domestic work, neoliberalism & transforming labor', for which i extend my humblest gratitude to @dyckron, who made me aware of it.
@kathimmel Don't you think it about time to pay domestic laborer's a living wage? Look at the contribution ... right?
@mistergibson yes. yes, i do. unequivocally.

Oct 24, 2023 Around 90% of Iceland's female workforce, including the Prime Minister, went on strike, seeking to highlight the importance of women to the economy. Is this what you are driving at, Kat xx

@Geri @kathimmel Yes, I hope to popularize the notion that citizens can withhold their labor and commerce to leverage the 1%.
@Geri @mistergibson indeed, geri. :)
@kathimmel @Geri @mistergibson donโ€™t get sentimental about Iceland. Equal pay across workplaces is still not yet achieved and sadly it is a racist society. I love Iceland, used to live and work there, and return every year, but people outside of Iceland often have misconceptions about the country.
@Lassielmr @Geri @mistergibson wasn't really getting sentimental in my reference to the 1975 women's strike. the overarching theme of my art is still just a reminder that there's a lot of unpaid labour in the world that most people don't even notice.
@Lassielmr @Geri @mistergibson also: IS there a predominantly white society that isn't racist?
@kathimmel
There should be a civil service job for full time parents or homemakers regardless of gender, but for the sake of ease, call the job "mother" The state should pay them a living wage with medical benefits and retirement pension. If more women had the option to actually make raising children a career with retirement benefits and didn't need to serve a man just to have a child, more of them might decide to have and raise children.
@The_Caretaker even though i'm slightly averse to the term 'civil service', i agree with your basic premise. /everyone/, regardless of ability to work, should be financially secure & have access to all life's comforts.

@kathimmel

Damn straight. Domestic labor is absolutely no-questions-asked labor!
