Phasing out fossil fuels ‘doomed to fail’, says Tony Blair as he calls for rethink of net zero policy – as it happened

‘Any strategy based on either phasing out fossil fuels in the short term or limiting consumption is a strategy doomed to fail,’ says former PM

the Guardian
"Blair said there should be more focus on #carboncapture, saying: “The disdain for this technology in favour of the purist solution of stopping fossil-fuel production is totally misguided.” that's because it doesn't work and never will, you witless fool

@glynmoody It does seem rather bonkers to go to all the trouble of

* finding the carbon
* digging it up
* burning it
* capturing it
* finding somewhere to bury it
* burying it

rather than just

* not doing any of that.

@TimWardCam unless you are a fossil fuel trillionaire...
@TimWardCam @glynmoody I mean, one approach to take would be to say "Great: your licence to mine/drill fossil fuels is in inverse proportion to the volumes you claim your carbon capture devices can store. You can just burn that carbon again once you've captured it!"
@spacehobo @TimWardCam @glynmoody Blair simply hasn't changed since 1997 - one big reason he got power is he courted "Mondeo Man" and other than some traffic safety laws did very little to get in the way of driving and fossil fuel use, partly caved in to the right wing fuel protestors in 2001 and tried alongside USA to bully the Middle East by military means to secure cheap oil...
