A US #Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet has been “lost” at sea after it fell overboard from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier while it was being towed on board, the Navy said in a statement on Monday.

A US official said initial reports from the scene indicated that the Truman made a “hard turn” [seriously? an aircraft carrier?] to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard.

@Nonilex A while back I read a book on the Battle of Midway. I was amazed at how many hard turns the Japanese carriers had to make. The idea being that the defending carriers needed to present the smallest cross section as a target to incoming fire. Thus many abrupt turns adapting repeatedly to enemy attacks. It’s a desperate maneuver. Which begs the question — how in hell did the Houthis manage to seriously threaten an American aircraft carrier?

The article says that AC's are surprisingly nimble. Otherwise I'd thought that it's turning radius is longer than my European suburban commute.

I'd rather bet that the spirit of the Millennial Challenge lives on.

Seriously, yes.

Worth a lot, even if hit, to take the damage on a more durable portion of the ship.

They can heel far enough in an emergency turn to dump a lot more stuff, too. Commander has some choice: lose materiel and possibly sailors, or possibly lose the entire ship. Made the wartime call. Got off cheap with just materiel loss; experience and training bears fruit.
