Hey #fediverse, my account is now being followed by `FollowBot @ pl.eragon.re`. What is the purpose of bots like this, and should I allow them to follow me. My gut says block.

#mastodon

@outofcontrol probably to pull posts into that instance's federated feed without needing to participate in relays
@ian Thanks Ian. Benign, and I worry too much?
@outofcontrol Yep. Note the bio on the bot.
@ian I did read the bio… but one as paranoid as me sees things not there sometimes

@outofcontrol I don’t know about that particular bot, but I usually block bots regardless.

Bots are often an easy way to for people to follow more diverse content of a particular theme, for whatever reason this bot thinks your feed follows it’s theme.

But I don’t recommend people follow bots for diversifying their feed. What you should do is follow hashtags, and make sure you hashtag your own posts so people can find what you write — if you want your posts to be seen by a wider audience, that is.

I prefer people to find my posts through hashtags, not bots, that is why I usually block bots accounts.

@ramin_hal9001 Agree. I’ve not followed bots and make a reasonable attempt to use meaningful hashtags where appropriate, both when posting and when following. .

@outofcontrol

Searching for @followbot at my Profile Seach, I get:

"Followbot

@followbot

Automated

Personal note
This bot is used to improve federation of my instance.

Feel free to follow back, I won't post anything.

I should be respecting #nobot if it's in your bio."

If this concerns you, #Mute and #Block

Personally I have no interests in building a bot's (and its owner's) Following account stats

Why can't the owner just Follow profiles organically like every one else?
