"Conservatives *hate* complexity"

a superb post by @pluralistic that distills a core aspect of why right-wing ideas about how to manage things like the economy, immigration and our personal lives collide so rapidly with reality

key passage here, but do read the whole thing

This wasn't the way I wanted to hear Doctorow having cancer. :/

And I hope things continue to be ok!

I realise our relationship is the dictionary defintion of parasocial, but it's a parasocial relationship I've had with you since before I could vote (I'm 40).

Just writing that there seems foolish, but I wanted to tell you how your existence in the background radiation of my life has been meaningful. You're just one of those things that have always been there!

I hope you continue being there, and that things continue to be ok!

@iju
Same same. Literally could have written those words.

@iju @clive thank you very much. I really appreciate it
@iju @pluralistic @clive huge same. Thank you Cory, and millions of us wish you well.
@clive @pluralistic Great post! It made me think about how seductive the illusion of control can be and how easily it fits into one's identity. When that breaks, it can be existential.

@clive @pluralistic there's an aikido technique, `ikkyo`; my first teacher's thoughts on the matter: https://tampaaikido.com/articles/saotome-sensei-and-the-meaning-of-ikkyo/ --

> Saotome Sensei related the term “ikkajo” (the older name for “ikkyo”) to the Zen “Icho-go Ichi-e” (there is only now, there is only this opportunity).
> Always new mind. Never treat your attacker like an old wife for old husband, always treat them with fresh eyes, “Ikkyo” is a state of mind and philosophy that transcends any physical activity.

Saotome Sensei and the Meaning of Ikkyo

At this year’s Winter Intensive training seminar in Florida, Saotome Sensei spoke a lot about the meaning of “ikkyo”. Ito illustrate, he shared a story about a time from when he was training with the Founder, O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba: O-Sensei would frequently say, ‘ikkyo whole life.’ Once, I responded, ‘Sensei – I already know ikkyo!’ […]

Everybody hates complexity. The difference is that some people recognize that reality is complex and do their best to work with that complexity in as simple a way as possible (but no simpler).

Other people ignore that complexity and assume simplicity. The problem is that this latter attempt fails when it encounters reality. The current right wing just don't care when it fails.

Conservatives are lazy, too lazy to do the hard boring work of maintaining & reforming bureaucracies
Oh sure they talk a good game, time to do the work, nah they want to outsource any of the heavy lifting.
Any conservatives that are able & willing to do the work aren't fit for polite company...
@clive @pluralistic I worry that the progressive left has eaten the same poison. The progressives have ideological islands/shibboleths that can't be questioned. If you mention an issue we are all expected to be all in or we are fascists. If this not a refusal to accept other opinions and still be a good person? Is this not the demand that a complex world be made a binary simple yes/not, right/wrong world?
@clive @pluralistic I don't agree that the tendency for simplification is exclusively conservative. I think this is the defining feature of populism. While populism may currently be experiencing a resurgence on the right, there have been plenty of left wing populist movements. They all share the same fallacy: that the solution to the world's problems is simple.

@clive @pluralistic

Key: “From eye-color to gender, evolution produces spectra, not binaries. It's ineluctably (and rather gloriously) complicated.”

Thanks for sharing 🙂

@clive @pluralistic "complex" means that you have to actually think about stuff. and thinking is hard and annoying.
So it's far easier to just ignore it and pull the world down to their level.
@clive @pluralistic In the case of immigration, I'm pretty sure that just keeping everyone out isn't an unintended byproduct of eliminating fraud, it's the actual goal and "eliminating fraud" is a pretext.

@clive @pluralistic Again and again and again:

What they really miss is the way cereal tasted before their parents divorced.

@Agrippina_Siderea @clive @pluralistic this is poetry 🥰 best definition of conservatism ever.
@clive @pluralistic I've said the same many times, but I guess I'm not famous.
