I have some resources to distribute in my community, but I'm not very well connected here, so I'm not sure where to start.

So I stopped by the library and had a quick chat with the librarian, who was amazingly helpful!

This is just a librarian appreciation post. All hail librarians!

@grammargirl We love you right back : )

@grammargirl

Librarians are some of my favorite people. Be very nice to them.

Not to hijack a thread, but I have a question and this fell right in front of me.

Librarians (or library-adjacent folks)! Now that I have your attention - how would you suggest I go about finding a copy of The Lord of the Rings trilogy - here's the kicker - large print, library bound, and ideally in a single physical volume. Yes, it'd be a boat anchor.

Why? I'm old now, vision going, and I read nearly everything on my tablet, because of said vision issues - and I miss sitting down and reading a book. I can make do with other books on the tablet, but LotR has a special place. I'd like to buy one to have and own and read 20 more times and eventually leave as a legacy.

Any advice is appreciated.

I say we nationalize Google Search and put librarians in charge of it.

@Uair @grammargirl

Or someone like the Europe Union could create a safe effective search engine available to everyone.

Or use DuckDuckGo which makes it easy to disable the AI capabilities or one of the other
alternatives.

What might also be useful, and I am sure some exist, subject area specific search engines that only search reliable sources.

@the5thColumnist @grammargirl

I use searx.org. I think it's an open source frontend for google. Like duckduck, but not corporate. Very clean interface.

@Uair @grammargirl
Added it to my list of search engines.
Pre-Google I loved AltaVista from DEC

@Uair @grammargirl

Okay. That is the best idea to date in 2025.

Possibly since google was created.

@Uair @grammargirl

I don't currently trust the U.S. government. Can we put the UN in charge of it or something?

@grammargirl Glory to your library!
@grammargirl Librarians are the best!
@grammargirl 100% it just keeps getting worse. Librarians, NOT “AI”
