"A huge 89% majority of the world’s people want stronger action to fight the climate crisis but feel they are trapped in a self-fulfilling “spiral of silence” because they mistakenly believe they are in a minority, research suggests.

Making people aware that their pro-climate view is, in fact, by far the majority could unlock a social tipping point and push leaders into the climate action so urgently needed, experts say."

Activate climate’s ‘silent majority’ to supercharge action, experts say

Making concerned people aware their views are far from alone could unlock the change so urgently needed

@mothninja problem with such surveys is they stop at "suuure I would like to go green and save planet" without further asking "great, so you are ready to for ex. pay 15% more TCO wise for electric car and do your once a year long holiday trip 10% slower (including charging)?". Because answer to second one is usually "nooo way I pay 15% more or travel 10% slower - I'd rather join random conspiracy saying there's no problem at all at that point" Aaand reality is we should tell them no car at all.💁‍♂️
‘Spiral of silence’: climate action is very popular, so why don’t people realise it?

Researchers find 89% of people around the world want more to be done, but mistakenly assume their peers do not

@mothninja How on earth does "How much of the $450 I might gave you would you give to climate charity and how much would you keep for yourself knowing it's a climate related experiment?" tell us anything about real choices? Sure in that circumstances they would be ashamed to take 100% and say like "and climate action is a scam because uncle of father of sister of my friend saw on youtube" XD. Again: 80% don't use ready made cheap climate solutions if they only find it tiny bit inconvenient.

@mothninja

The system, especially in Western countries but not only, is set to keep those ~90% of population occupied by being wage labor slaves, working poor, or simply poor. They usually don't have the time to rally on demonstration and protest actions several days a week.

The rich and super rich who are a major cause of the climate crisis, however, have as much time available to prevent climate protection as they want since their exploited blood money is working for them.

No #SystemChange and #EatTheRich, no climate and nature protection.

@mothninja What they want, & what they are prepared to do to get what they want are two different things, even after you've taken account of this illusion of minority status. Actual voting & consumer behaviour doesn't necessarily reflect what people tell opinion polling organisations. They lie - to themselves, as well as to the opinion pollsters.
@mothninja If 89% want stronger action against climate change why are heat pumps a "public controversy" https://climatejustice.global/@parents4future/114381157057715764 ? Why electic cars that offer maaaybe 25% of solution at 10% "inconvenience" cost are already too radical for so many? And above all who are they waiting for to make a "stronger act against CC"? Why are car sales not 89% down? Petrol use? Plane flights? Fast fashion? Sorry buy that kind of nonsense empty talk ppl like to do at absolute "0" cost gets us nowhere.

Heat pumps now victim of culture wars. "Sad news about the Happy Heat Pump Podcast. Sorry to say, that after about 20 episodes, we’re drawing it to a close at the request of the BBC which worries it may be seen as steering into areas of public controversy." - Evan Davis, BBC Radio 4 @[email protected] (on bsky) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJPKgngqoX0 cc @[email protected]

@mothninja Sorry but individual ppl at large DO absolutely nothing to fight climate change. At best they keep talking somebody (governments, business) should do something for them. And when they actually do, public reaction is largely allergic. Like that not-so-great but notable positive change EV technology brings. 20% buys them, 50% actively creates conspiracies about them. Same for heat pumps. And governments? Far right taking over Europe because somebody dare to even TALK about Green Deal.
