Made a new cool wafrn frontend update. Apologies to @alexia who will have to improve my ugly UI in the next few days.

When replying to a post you see a list of the people you are mentioning and no need to have their @ writen on the post!

This makes a lot more sense because tumblr origins and (optional) bluesky integration!

@[email protected] @[email protected] nooooooo whyyyyyy

@[email protected] @[email protected] please just mention people in your posts

@[email protected] @[email protected] i have normal opinions about this

elaborate on them, I wanna see what you have to say and whether or not this actually, yknow, makes a difference

@Chloe

@[email protected] well,

a) when I'm not mentioned in a reply it feels like the other user is trying to remove me from the conversation

2) if I'm not tagged in a reply, then another reply is made to that reply, I won't get notified (at least in *key)

so basically
<my post>
|> reply (I get notified)
| | > reply to reply (I dont' get notified unless I'm tagged in the text)

@[email protected] I think the first reason is mainly because there's an expectation that you will always be tagged in replies since thats how most software works

couple of things

I find it hilarious that you started with a) then went to 2)

either way this is a purely cosmetic change because all we're doing is:

  • introducing a UI element instead of having it in the composer
  • stripping mentions from the plaintext but keeping them in the AP data (specifically, the tag field)
  • What we aren't doing is changing who gets tagged. Or well at least we shouldn't but it seems gabbo changed the logic probably as a result of rewriting some things (CC @gabboman cough we should tag everyone up the thread by default for parity with old behavior)

    really what I think this was supposed to be is moving them out of the plaintext and into exclusively the tag field like what snac does

    That said, that's a *key bug. If there is a mention for you in the tag field then *key should probably respect that

    @[email protected] @[email protected] what's interesting is I think it does, but idk how much it's properly supported

    well honestly it seems that even mastodon supports it properly which is a miracle so I think uh, someone should look into that

    This is something that was already being done in the mobile app by @javascript (stripping mentions from plaintext) and we're just now "catching up" and iterating on that so to speak

    of course we can undo it if no one wants to fix misskey it causes too many issues but we'd really like this especially for our bluesky integration where it's a PITA to find out who to mention by text and whom not to mention

    notification towards user should be ok, but other users may not
    @[email protected] fwiw I did get this reply notification

    @[email protected] but I don't think @[email protected] got my reply?

    - posted by Chloe
    I did, I was just replying
    @[email protected] huh, intersting

    well, fwiw you can't tag users on *key without adding their username in the plaintext note

    @[email protected] so ig it works in the backend but there is not frontend functionality to do it

    - posted by Chloe

    I am seeing users removing @ and thinking there is a mention going on.
    Also bluesky does use "this style" too.

    in my case makes sense because tumblr culture

    @[email protected] @[email protected] ok that's interesting, I got notified for this reply

    but it didn't automatically tag Alexia, I had to do that manually

    - posted by Chloe
    @Chloe @[email protected] @[email protected] misskey does respect tag ( remotely at least ) and understands it but it doesn't have a way of actually manually managing it from misskey other than manually having the actual @'s in the post itself
    @sneexy @[email protected] @[email protected] this is exactly my point

    yeah it may "support" it but it's not meant to work with it from a user perspective

    - posted by Chloe
    @[email protected] does Alexia see this reply? I wonder if sharkey actually uses whatever you're using on your end to tag people without actually tagging them

    - posted by Chloe
    @[email protected] @[email protected] hmm, snac will recover all 2 (3) mentions from this reply
    @[email protected] @[email protected] wtf why does it not tag gabbo

    - posted by Chloe
    @Chloe @[email protected] @[email protected] I suppose cause it's a direct reply to gabbo?
    @sodiboo @[email protected] @[email protected] i mean I suppose but also not gabbo isn't mentioned in this reply (but I think he's still getting all these replie)

    @Chloe @[email protected] @[email protected] oh yeah but that's 'cause we're on Misskey which handles it wrong lol
    @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] so this feels like a skill issues on the side of misskey actually. because misskey uses the text of the post, not the activitypub "tag" to recover who should be mentioned in the reply
    @gabboman @Chloe @alexia replying from mastodon recovers all the tags here
    @Chloe actually misskey does something scuffed here. the text of the post above includes short mentions. but misskey looks in the "tag" and expands those to be long mentions. and then the long mentions are recovered in the reply
