No, but... seriously,
@internetarchive ?

With all the profound love I have for you, do i really have to contract and interact with Google/Alphabet Inc. in order to be able to log in to The Internet Archive?

Is that something temporary? A mistake? Or is that part of some sort of contractual obligation and/or partnership with the company?

How can people who refuse any interaction with this criminal/monopolistic conglomerate still contribute to your efforts?

@jz @internetarchive is the ”google library“ some kind of js thingy loaded from google.com, or is this really “sign-in with your google account” ? I mean I get your point (I think) but the intent is not the same.
@_nb
These answers are not mutually exclusive. The "sign-in with Google" prompt is indeed provided by a JS library on Google.com.
And whether intentional or not, this prevents logging into Archive.org if you block Google.com. That's not cool and needs to be fixed.

@_nb @jz Both. But I just block the JS with uMatrix and I can log in just fine.

@nemobis @_nb try block everything google. remove your google cookies or access to them. can you still log in?
@jz Yes. (I've only enabled them in an incognito window to show what would be loaded if I didn't disable it.)

@nemobis I don't know UMatrix, but it looks to me like the lines related to google.com and accounts.google.com are green, including some identification cookies that are authorized. It would be logical that this is why it is working.

Try to get the entire two lines in red, looking maybe like this (see attached) and try again

@jz Again, that was a screenshot for illustration. This is how I always have uMatrix and how I always log into archive.org. (You can't see the blocked cookie unless you unblock the JavaScript.)
@nemobis i see... i wonder what happens if say you blacklist the domains google.com and accounts.google.com, and/or if you had them blacklisted from the fresh start of your browser profile (this is currently my configuration). maybe this authentication/verification is not done at every connection or something?
@jz They are disallowed/blacklisted by default. I only allowed them on an incognito window, which doesn't affect my usual session. Of course, being logged in most of the time, I don't see that login form often. It might be that they also load a captcha in some cases.
@nemobis @jz
on a sidenote, umatrix is not maintained anymore, ublock is now the standard adblocker, it also has umatrix stuff in it as a i can see
@nopsled Thanks. I know but I still prefer uMatrix as long as it keeps working. :)

@jz @internetarchive I don't have any buttons, just says

----Or----

And below that I can log in.

@bbbhltz @internetarchive exactly. now try again, while preventing anything inside that page to connect to google.com or accounts.google.com

then what happens?

#AskingForAFriend

@jz @internetarchive surely there are less awful measures than Google reCAPTCHA? It feels wrong to have Google as a bouncer for the Internet’s most prominent library.
@stebby @jz @internetarchive
Let's use Anubis.
Inbostrusive for the people, unbearable for bots/AI companies.
@stebby
@jz @internetarchive
There is also hCaptcha but I feel like we as netizens should also talk about the ethical problem of feeding data to AI for free as we've been doing for years through reCaptcha and hCaptcha.
I think AI-based Captcha solutions should be removed from any serious website. It is often a complete waste of time and is in my opinion completely unethical based on the aforementioned free labor.
