So #3GoodThings over the past few days... Friday we had our Spring Covid booster jab, yes, the V word. Full slaves to the Gates Foundation, again. Apart from not using any MS sw, natch.

2) Mrs R found 2 old P&S film cameras, one had a film in (found by opening the back, not so good). Replaced the batteries, test film run, awaiting dev.

3) It has been sunny all last week and forecast sunny all next week. Most sensible folk think this is a Good Thing! (... though photoing is much harder... ;-)

The cameras that Mrs R found in a drawer were an #OlympusStylus (aka mju 1), and an even older #MamiyaU. The Stylus I got for her on 42nd St NYC. Got it home, didn't work. No warranty because "grey import". Also, cost me more than UK price of the later mju 2 model! Β£40 to get it going again. Shafted!

Not sure when we got the Mamiya; I always rather liked it. Zone focusing, sliding window to turn on and reveal the lens, but a simpler design than the mjus. 1/n

I used a roll of #Kentmere100 for testing: 18 frames in the Stylus, rewound, transferred to the Mamiya, made 20 blank exposures in a dark bag (quite tricky for some reason, but we got there). Stylus does auto-wind, sounds a bit dodgy; Mamiya is manual wind. Devved the roll last week, scanned it tonight.

Always takes me a while to review images, so no pics yet. But overall the Olympus results were focused, sharp, contrasty and well exposed. The Mamiya not so much, in all departments! 2/n

@carusb Not sure I’m understanding you. What exactly were you testing? Why the blank frames on the Mamiya? Picture me confused. πŸ₯΄
@tomnorthfilm sounds like Chris was testing the same roll in two cameras. Shot half, then shot the same half again in a dark bag to advance it to the right spot and then shot the rest of the roll. Did I get it right @carusb?
@shom @tomnorthfilm Yes, that's right. Half in the Oly, then just under half in the Mammy. Colour me cheapskate! (I wasn't particularly hopeful either would work properly, and since there were two at the same time, decided to share the risk.) I suspect they'll both end up going to charity.
@carusb @shom Ah, now I get it. I thought you fired the second half of the roll as blanks in the dark bag. Now I get it.

@tomnorthfilm @shom I had to do it that way round (Oly first), as I couldn't work out how make the Oly take blank frames, because of its auto-flash! But then I had trouble making the Mammy trigger at all in the dark bag. TBH I've forgotten the hack I used, but it was very time consuming!

It was quite an interesting experiment anyway, as I was scanning the whole roll in one session, same scan settings and developer, which for me, accentuated the differences.

@carusb @shom This is much easier with good old manual winding cameras for sure.
@tomnorthfilm @carusb I actually did that two days ago because I wanted to switch from Vision 3 250D to B+W for an indoor thing but really wanted to use the Bessa. I had never done that before and realized, why not right, it so easy with manual advance/rewind.
@shom @tomnorthfilm @carusb not at all related to the film winding that this thread is about...but how did you like 250D? Did you develop it yourself? I've been curious about some of the cine films but I'm a bit nervous about the remjet layer
@shom @tomnorthfilm @carusb although it might be a moot point given the 100, 400, 1000 ft rolls of cine film don't seem to be available direct to consumers anymore

@kaiser_photo I have developed 500T at home with C41. It's an interesting look, I think I will give ECN-2 a go when I amass enough rolls.
Here's an example, I wish I had a 85b warming filter (bought one, haven't tried yet): https://fosstodon.org/@shom/113354603220052840

I think there's still some ebay shortend listings to be had for about a $1/ft roughly. But yeah, can't buy direct which is a bummer (not that I could handle 400ft winding). Also, the remjet wasn't a big deal at all. I did a baking soda wash for a minute, a thorough water bath, and then developed.

@shom @tomnorthfilm @carusb glad to hear - so it seems like remjet is a relatively easy thing to overcome

@kaiser_photo @shom @carusb

@stevebrokaw has a lot of experience with remjet removal. He’s more active on BSKY than here, but let’s see if he chimes in.
