In today's mastodon.social update, we're testing a few minor quality of life improvements to the web interface: Every list of accounts now has a shortcut to add or remove an account from lists; clicking a hashtag in a post now brings up a menu with a shortcut to browse posts in that hashtag specifically by the author, and a new featured tab on profiles to make featured hashtags and posts easier to find and navigate.
@Gargron Give me something to turn off nagging "Please alt text" things. many times I put in the toot text what it is. I hate having to re-enter it when I add image.
@jgobble Disable it in preferences.
@Gargron ARGH! I didn't know I could. Thanks!
@Gargron is that solvent the Problem that Features hashtags (only one) is Tugend away in the corner of the Server Profile Screen and not seen on the Profile „blade“?
@Gargron
What about preventing registration floods of spam accounts?
@Gargron ...and making it possible to add hashtags to lists?

@Gargron

This is a feature that I wanted a lot! Glad that it's going to be implemented.

@Gargron thank you for all you and the small crew are doing to build something AWESOME

@Gargron I like it!

However I think demoting pinned posts to the featured tab on profiles kinda takes away from their main purpose? Usually pinned posts are posts that you'd want to be the first thing other users see when visiting your profile.

The fact that the featured tab is not active by default somewhat goes against that.

What do you think?

@nileane We're probably going to bring back one pinned post on the default tab with a link to the featured for more. Having to scroll past 5+ is too disruptive in my view.
@Gargron Oh nice. Yeah that seems like a good middle ground
@nileane @Gargron ik that sharkey has a pinned posts tab that is shown by default, and it works quite well imo

@Gargron Oh! Now that there’s a featured tab, can Featured Profiles be added back? Definitely a possibility now. 😊

Mastodon Featured Profiles

Once upon a time, Mastodon had a design element on profile pages that displayed a user’s selection of “Featured Profiles”. It was configured very similarly to “Featured Hashtags”, allowing you to choose accounts you want to feature on your profile page.

@Gargron Any idea on getting the language filter setting to actually work? It's been many years...
@Gargron Thank you everyone. Those sound great! They remove a lot of barriers to using hashtags.
@Gargron for some reason with the latest update it no longer displays profiles as mutuals: the follow button just says unfollow instead of mutual
@Gargron possibly a bug: "Add or Remove from lists" menu item appears even on non-following accounts. I guess the menu should be disabled until user follows the account, or… maybe the 'Add [account] to lists' modal need to show some error message if adding fails 🤔

@cheeaun Looks like a bug indeed. Could you open a GH issue?

@Gargron How about better #moderation tools against #FediverseChick #Nicole #bots #propaganda ?

@szakib
> How about better moderation tools

Any specific suggestions for how either the server, or the app, would distinguish between bot spam and genuine DMs?

@Gargron

@strypey @Gargron Server side. Tools for the moderators, not some automagic. For example, filtering toots by matching patterns, like this: https://freeradical.zone/@tek/114445307670609056
Teknique is my middle name (@[email protected])

Because Mastodon provides zero assistance to moderators, I've updated Spamhammer to address today's wave of Russian misinformation spam. #SlavaUkraini I wish there were a built-in way to block messages matching a pattern, but there isn't, and there's no way I'm doing this by hand. https://github.com/freeradical-dot-zone/spamhammer/

I wonder of a plug-in system is the way to go? So devs can build generic fediverse moderation tools, and plug them into whichever software a server runs. Or plug in existing tools, like spam filters designed for email servers or blog comments. Or those existing tools could be forked or extended to create generic fediverse tools.

#fediverse #moderation

@Gargron

@strypey @Gargron Or, hear me out, an actual built-in spam filter that can match patterns specified by mods (not only admins) on the web UI. (Same as in any email admin interface.)
There is absolutely no need for everyone to implement this individually.

@Gargron is it possible to set an "always translate" option to a profile in the web ui?
That would make following accounts outside your region a lot easier.
Thanks
@synchron Translations cost money. That would not be economical if you might not read every post.
@Gargron
I see. Thanks!
@synchron @Gargron I can imagine a client that runs bergamot-translator locally for such a case, the way Firefox does. Btw, integrating Bergamot running directly on the server into Mastodon would be nice, seems to be better than LibreTranslate in almost every scenario (but has models for fewer languages).
@synchron @Gargron check out @phanpy, it has autotranslate! It works great!
@liaizon @Gargron @phanpy looks nice.
Thank you very much!

@Gargron There seems to be a new bug related to this test: When I visit the profile page of one of my mutuals, the follow/unfollow-button doesn't read "Mutual" any more, but "Unfollow".
