Yo! You #datahoarders Do y'all really back up your 'linux iso's". I like wanna keep them, but I can always just get them back....right! Save space or OCD shit!

@train I know the feeling. I would only recommend backing up favorites, or ones that hold some sort of sentimental value. If you know for sure that you can replace them in the future, I wouldn't bother with any backups. "But what if the source goes down?" Is a question I find myself asking myself far too often.
@tuhgy It's this battle of how much is to much. Am i just looking for things to take up space so I can justify having the space.. Blah!

@train I just use SnapRAID (not-a-real-backup) + MergerFS. Three 12TB drives gets me 24TB with "fake backups" (and I could actually throw two more 12TBs in there for 48TB and still preserve parity if only one drive were to fail)

Already had one drive fail, and managed to totally rebuild without having to hunt anything down again.

@RxBrad I don't know if I'm garden against failure. It's just that they are "Linux ISOs" do I need to back them up!! You know!?!?!

@train oh I get it. Honestly, they're all just another download away.

So for me, rather than full backups, I just do SnapRAID for convenience.

@train Back up the .torrent files! The network will likely keep them alive for years or decades to come, so you can always plug them into your torrent client and redownload them if need be
@train I get that, depends
I usually backup my magnets/torrent files but if the I notice one files become more difficult to get, I will also include it in a special archiving directory
@train I backup the stuff that's more difficult to find but the popular stuff I figure I can get back or I could just live without.
@train it depends on the rarity for me. Like, if we're talking about the MCU of linux ISOs, like Ubuntu 24 and Debian, I can always get them again. Now if we're talking about the early 2010s kdrama of linux ISOs, like backtrack 3.0, I'll make sure to keep it and back it up as I may be one of the last few who has kept a copy of it.
