There is now a blog on my website! Unlike my Digital Garden which contains evolving notes, the blog features more polished, complete articles that I've spent time refining.

First article: What Software I use and where it comes from. I’ve been wanting to put together an overview for some time now, and the current global circumstances have motivated me to finally make it happen.

Is it important to consider the origin of software, or does it not really matter?

The Software I Use | iamrob.in

robins own little space on the internet

@iamrobin it's your blog, it's autobiographical, so I think where/when/why is pretty crucial. But then that mentality might be where the recipe blogger reputation comes from!
@jasper To get it right: you mean the timing is not the best to consider the origin of software, since the topic is currently to emotionally charged?
@iamrobin I would include it. If it's still relevant then it's useful, and if it's not but you're still using it I think that's interesting too.
@jasper interesting perspective! I also have the faint feeling that it is a little too superficial to mention only the country of origin without looking more deeply at the effects. Maybe will consider this for another iteration of this topic. Thanks for your input!
@iamrobin Very interesting article! Is there a RSS feed for the new blog? I'm just able to find the RSS feed of the 365 project.
@kwalm Thanks, glad you like it! RSS is on the list, but I wanted to deploy it first before I get carried away with more features I have in mind 😄
@iamrobin Nice! No task manager app?
@JeroenSchaper part of my obsidian daily note setup :)
@iamrobin Bisher ganz gut. Das neue Layout Feature ist sehr gut. Gibt es aber nur in der Beta. Das Plug-In Universum ist kleiner. Dafür eine native App, was ich sehr angenehm finde. Klare Preise.

@oliverbrux klingt eigentlich ganz vielversprechend.

@iamrobin nice post! A way to increase the european share would be to give my podcast app Queue a try :)

‎Queue - Simple Podcasts

‎Queue is the simplest podcast app out there. New episodes from your subscriptions automatically appear in one simple list, your Queue. From here you can either play them, or archive them. When you open an episode, you see the title and show notes right away, and you can also play the episode from…

@fossil12 Oh thanks for the hint! Changed ✅
An intro to Pen Plotters - quarterstudio - Medium

I originally posted this on my website back in July 2014. It seems that interest in pen plotters has picked up recently, so I decided to move the post to Medium which is arguably a much better place…

@iamrobin Awesome post, I love seeing what others use and work with. 😊

I was using Hyper for a long time as well, but since it’s unmaintained, I recently switched to Ghostty and I’m loving it. 👌

As for the eternal design tool question…Penpot is an open-source European alternative that is close to Figma, but not quite all the way there yet. It’s worth a look though, if you haven’t tried it yet. 😊

@amxmln Thanks for the kind words! Same for me, always curious what others are using 🤓

Oh I didn't know that Hyper is no longer being maintained. Thanks for the info, I'll have a look at Ghostty right away!

I've heard of Penpot, and I follow their videos on new features - looks like a very supportive software! Unfortunately, I'm quite limited to Figma for work. But I've been thinking about looking at Penpot for private projects, but also even at Sketch again.

@iamrobin The last commit to Hyper was a year ago by Dependabot and the last release in January 2023, that’s why I think it’s no longer maintained, but I don’t know for sure. Personally, I’ve found Ghostty a much better alternative though. 👌

Totally get the Figma dependency, it’s the same for me and Penpot still has a long way to go to reach that level of polish—but what I like opposed to Sketch and Affinity Designer is that Penpot is platform independent. 😊

@iamrobin I really enjoy these kinds of posts, Thanks for sharing! Awesome that you included where everything is made as well!
@iamrobin Nice post, thanks for sharing! Outside of the software (and the viewpoint of the current global issues) I also always love to read about what hardware people use (or office setups).
@rhazn maybe something for a follow up article!
