So it looks like the incoming new coalition government of 🇩🇪 Germany (of conservatives with social democrats) will call the ministry for the environment the "Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety" (to go to SPD). "Energy" is reported to stay with "Economics" (CDU); "Consumer Protection" with "Justice" (SPD); "Nutrition" with "Agriculture" (CSU).

The press conference that just ended barely mentioned climate and nature protection. It was all just energy costs. No major transformation announcements. Anyone surprised? Not good.

Let's see what the text of the coalition agreement says. You can download it here:
https://www.spd.de/fileadmin/Dokumente/Koalitionsvertrag_2025.pdf

While committing to the German and EU climate limits, though couched in careful language, the coalition paper sees CO2 pricing as the main instrument for reductions, though again with notable caveats regarding price shocks and increases. Very unfortunately, the text says "Gains from CO2 [pricing] will be given back to citizens" but says nothing on how (not good if sold as flowing back through indirect effects). It also finalised text that Germany will not support including agriculture in ETS-2.
There is, on paper, a strong commitment to expanding renewable energies across the board and make them the backbone of the future energy system. But that is immediately contradicted by planning for 20 GW of new fossil gas power (though they say it's not to impact climate targets - what?). Biomass is promoted and to be expanded, against the warnings of science. CCS offshore and on land are promoted. Nuclear isn't in the text anymore. Coal exit to remain at 2038, which is too late.
Btw, the press conference by the German hard right illiberals- polling at nearly a quarter of voters, up since the February elections - was absolutely sickening. I very much believe that moral integrity or lack thereof can often be detected in the language a person uses. Fascism uses a certain type of language. Here, the hard right's message was that it's all lies, deception, doom and gloom, it's all dishonest and despicable etc etc - the language of hate and arrogant supremacy. Just sickening.

@W_Lucht Well they talk so much about deception because it's one of their most precious tools they exploit themselves.
Next thing they'll suggest will be that trees are #leftist ideology and we would have to chop them all down.

@W_Lucht As bad as expected. The misconception that CCS allows for more fossile power and that gas is somewhat better than coal. How do we get them to understand that the climate targets are completely unreachable this way? Or do they understand and just outright lie?
@W_Lucht Es wird zurückgegeben, indem der Strom verbilligt wird, nicht als Klimageld.
@lothenon
