Scottish Green Co-Leader Lorna Slater urges Keir Starmer to cancel President Trump' state visit:

'Donald Trump is a danger to human rights around the world & a danger to our climate. He represents the worst of politics & the decisions he’s making are having a terrible impact on migrant communities, women’s rights & on the US economy.

He is not a friend of Scotland & is not going to change who he is because the Prime Minister asks him to'!

Again the Greens are on the right page.

... and yet also the wrong one.

I can't fathom it either, but AFAIK Orange Stalin was chosen as US President in a free and fair election. If Starmer refuses to meet with him, the message that sends is that the UK govt knows better than US citizens who their head of state should be. That's the kind of thing we might expect from Drump himself, but in general, it's not the way international diplomacy works.

@strypey

Its a difficult call isn't it.... but their positioning is broadly in line with a lot of sentiment here - perhaps we just wish Starmer would be less will to appear taken in by Trump?

I get that. The current NZ Foreign Affairs Minister has his tongue firmly inserted into Orange Stalin's rear end. It's embarrassing.

We have our own Starmer here, called Chris Hipkins. I just wish Labour would pick leaders who know what labour is, who does it, and that they are the people their party is supposed to serve.

Starmer didn't refuse to meet Xi Jinping in Rio. Even though there are plenty of horrifying things about his regime he could have raised as reasons to do so. It's just not how the game is played.
