If you have a Republican Senator and/or House Rep, congratulations: today is your day!!

They can stop these mush-brained tariffs any time they want. They have that power. CALL THEM, relentlessly, and ask why they’re not doing that.

Pit Republicans against their president. Pit them against each other. Shake the jar and make them fight. This is a •huge• fracture point in the MAGA coalition. Stick dynamite in it and blow it up.

I wrote here about exploiting coalition fracture points as a strategy, and about how the right wing has had wild success doing it to the left for decades now:

We need to wise up and seize this strategy in moments when it is viable. Now is such a moment.

Find the fracture points in the coalition and drive a stick of dynamite into each one of them. The right-wingers have been doing this to the US left — “left” as in “everything left of fascist” — for a decade now, with •wild• success. Anything that divides the coalition, they inflame it, make it a crisis, force people to take sides. 2/

Facts are on our side here: there tariffs really are a disaster, Congressional Republicans really could stop them any minute of any day here, and Republicans really are split about them. Seize this moment. Shake the jar and make them fight each other.
@inthehands I just contacted my Senators and asked them to extract concessions from GOP in exchange for a tariff vote. My focus was on return of prisoners illegally removed to el salvador and international students kidnapped by ICE.
@dekk
I like this. I’m not sure that’s a bargaining chip yet — it’s unclear to me any Republicans want a tariff vote — but plant the seed now I guess!
@inthehands would probably be better if they separated from the Republicans and formed a new party.
@girander
Encourage them to do that!
@inthehands Called the DC office of my MAGA rep in CA 01 (Rep. La Malfa) and actually talked to a real person, who said that he has no position on tariffs or any legislative effort to force oversight 🤷🏻‍♂️ The fact that I talked to a real person means that not nearly enough people are calling! I’m going to keep calling until he takes a side.

@inthehands My rep is a Dem, so I called the next closest one and gave his staffer an earful. She kept trying to stop me to ask me to identify myself so I gave her an alias and kept talking.

They should hear from everyone!

@grammasaurus
Harangue the Dems too. They should be making even more noise about this than they are!

@grammasaurus they want a name and address they can correlate to a voter to avoid spam campaigns

Imagine Republicans brigading Democratic legislators to get them to go along with their positions instead of that of their constituents

Honestly, I think moves like that are self defeating. They're already dismissing their own voters as holding a minority position that doesn't matter. Let's not give them ammunition of actual people pretending to be constituents (they'll clutch for excuses anyway, but eventually they will have to admit the truth)

Like @inthehands said, pressure yours to do more

@igrok @inthehands I know all the arguments against doing what I did, but dammit, we “play by the rules” too much of the time, and the R’s never do.

@grammasaurus it infuriates me too

Civil disobedience is a thing, but it has to do more good than harm

You could always try calling and asking what kind of support they need to protect them & their families from MAGA so they can stand up and do the right thing. Gets a similar point across but you aren't trying to trick them
