This time of the year especially you have to be sure to look before you reach (or step). In this case it was just a harmless ribbon #snake in the #garden hose pot (maybe it thought the striped hose was its big brother?) but there are also a lot of venomous snakes around here.

@Trilobyter ribbon snake thought the garden hose was a big female πŸ˜†

@Trilobyter

We had 6 black racers on our back patio yesterday afternoon. One of them must have been a female.

@Trilobyter
This is so nice to see ❀
But yeah, the poisoned ones.
The black hose might be nice and warm if it's in the sun, maybe that's why the snake was there?
@pascaline possibly for the warmth though that hose pot is mostly in the shade. More likely it was looking for breakfast - there’s often also little frogs in there because of the dampness/water. And we have been seeing this little ribbon snake, or probably there is more than one, hanging around plants and flower pots in the back of our house the last couple of weeks, which is where all those little frogs hang out as well. Circle of life and all that.
@Trilobyter
Yes, the circle of life. And these are harmless. I like snakes, but erm, respect the venomous ones!
@Trilobyter lovely 😍 reminds me of the snake i raised as a child, Stryker 😭 you were so beautiful

@Trilobyter
That is an interesting looking creature, thanks for sharing.

(When you say there's a lot of them around here, it could be helpful to say where 'here' is https://mastodon.nz/@rogerparkinson/114277328115674770 )

Can we please try and identify where we are posting from? I see posts about massive rainfall today (and it's raining heavily where I am: Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand), but it turns out there's an atmospheric river in the USA. Flags in your display name help, or maybe just say. Sometimes I see political posts about USA, UK or Australia and think: huh? Then I realise it's not here (but it almost could be...). There are lots of people here from lots of countries. Context is so helpful.

@AlexsandraSmart sorry, I give my location in my Mastodon header post - Texas. More specifically southeast Texas in the far northern part of the Houston metro area. Lots of woodlands & creeks around here plus a sub-tropical climate most of the time so…lots of snakes.
@Trilobyter Venomous or not, snakes are beautiful!
@Trilobyter What a cutie! Thanks for spreading the word that these are garden friends and not danger noodles.
