We unexpectedly got dry ice packing the ice cream mochi in an order from the Japan Centre today. It comes with a stern warning not to play with, but... I'm a former science teacher. There was absolutely no way I was going to not play with this stuff.
Many large bubbles, lots and lots of condensed-water 'steam' caused by the cold of the CO2.
Just look at all that science going on! Would anyone like to name any of the phenomena on show here? #SCIENCE #physics #dryIce #slomo #slowMotion

@[email protected] Dry ice in water I presume? Cool! (a deliberate, groan-worthy pun)
@fergus.oolong.co.uk Sublimation is one. The main important thing is don't touch it with bare hands and make sure you're somewhere reasonably ventilated so the CO2 buildup isn't too bad.
One thing I'd never considered before it's that because carbon dioxide is much more dense than air, not only does it builds up in a bowl with a lump of dry ice in the bottom, but also you can then float bubbles in it! If you're really lucky, they'll then freeze...
It took a REALLY long time, with much trial and error, to get nearly a whole bubble to freeze - I'd say it was worth it, even though I didn't film it as well as I might have.
Here's another video of the dry ice 'smoke' doing its thing. #slowMotion #physics #vortices #slomo #fluidDynamics #πŸ§ͺ
