Blender sets such a powerful example for the tech industry to strive for. This is the kind of thing we should be trying to build.

This demo reel is awesome.

Blender 4.4 - Showcase Reel

@andrewrk I agree! The project is an exemplar of "run lean, focus on your users". Their tech roadmap has been driven for years by "What do our users want to do that they can't?" and prioritizing based on applications over effort.
@andrewrk I mean... Even having the audacity to crowdsource a buyout for the software in bankruptcy in the early 2000s, when crowdsourcing wasn't a thing, was amazing. Ton Roosendaal is one of my open source heroes.
@andrewrk You are another, by the way... There are very few people willing to elaborate a vision for what they want, and then work towards that vision, at great personal sacrifice. You rock, Andrew.

@dneary thanks for the compliment, but, let's make sure it's abundantly clear that this is an arrangement that serves my personal needs. I like to work on this kind of code and I get to do it and I get to be the boss.

it's not exactly a sacrifice. if it were I'd be in politics or running a non profit that actually helps society more directly.

what I've done is solved for the middle space in the venn diagram where my needs are fully taken care of.

@andrewrk The fact that it's not a sacrifice is what makes you one of the exemplars!

There is a perception (not unreasonable!) out there that the choices for open source developers are:

* VC funded start-up
* Salaried job at large corporation
* Salaried job at VC funded start-up
* Starving Artist

People like you & Ton show that there are other options, if you can balance a revenue generating approach with doing what you care about.

I should learn @Blender sometime soon, @andrewrk.

Wee of a shame there's @blender but some videos are still exclusively available on GoogleTube though.
