In keeping with iOS’ customizability trend, if Apple does introduce circular icons to iOS 19 I would expect it to be a user choice — developers can provide circular variants of their icons like they provide dark mode variants today. This is how Android works, you can select a number of different shapes of homescreen icon.

And like visionOS, a ‘compatibility’ mode for legacy icons isn't impossible

@stroughtonsmith I’m not opposed to this, but the current system is rather clunky for those of us with significant numbers of alternate icons, especially if they vary between releases. Some streamlining would be nice.

I wouldn't even mind an option for truly transparent icons, but at some point the % of app size that's just icon assets gets out of hand 🙃

(I have a hard time imagining Apple offering more than squircles or circles as options though)

@montyhayter @stroughtonsmith if the icons are vector graphics, it shouldn't take much space

@iboalali @stroughtonsmith If only! Last I heard iOS app icons — as opposed to other assets used by an app — require PNGs.

(Certainly all of the documentation surrounding configuring icons, dark/tint mode support, and alternate icons only references PNG assets.)

And in any case not all things you might want as an app icon are easily represented by a vector image.

@stroughtonsmith I look forward to all the circled squircles that highlight apps that haven’t done the minimal work to make round icons!
@stroughtonsmith So, even less incentive for developers to support an “optional” feature?
@stroughtonsmith Perhaps they’ll allow any shaped icons like MacOS
