You can learn a lot of useful OPSEC lessons by examining the ways in which people get caught, so I'm just going to leave this right here.

How Three Alleged Tesla Vandals Got Caught

Automatic license plate readers, Instagram captions, and fingerprints.

@evacide Ooof I knew the surveillance apparatus was huge but seeing it in action gives me chills.
@Ratanasec @evacide Search for "afroduck lap of manhattan" and you'll see how a decade ago cameras, toll tags, and plate readers were used. Presumably the ability to track has improved.
@evacide What vandalism are they talking about? I just see some guys with Roman candles having a good time. Those cars probably spontaneously combusted. They tend to do that.
@evacide Interesting article indeed. But "...the website included a Molotov cocktail as its cursor." this I NEED. If it explodes when you click would be even better.
@evacide For one's personal health and well-being, make a habit of wiping handprints off things for cleanliness. Wear package handling gloves for safety and hygiene. Always wear a mask when not in your home.
For fun research, look into license plate flippers, which rental companies rivet their plates on, and where to buy novelty replica license plates. Also read about high-output IR license plate and interior lights. And how they can be beneficial when integrated into glasses and hats.
@evacide also plan your routes when you travel. It's not unusual to take different routes into and out of an area. I like travelling to a southern entrance to my nearby city, and leaves up north. But I live to the west. I also prefer to take alleys and back roads when I can. I always follow road rules and take my time, but I sometimes will drive around the block if I see something interesting This makes my drive more enjoyable.
@Stinkie
Also, ride bikes, do crimes.
@evacide
@stib @evacide if you ride a bike it's good to repaint it in black paint. And to use commodity tires from a major brand.
Unfortunately, they are easy to steal, so if you were to wipe it down for cleanliness, and then leave it, say, under a bridge and outside of camera range, forget to lock it up, and walk away, nobody may ever see it again.
@Stinkie @stib @evacide Also, there is a sense of fulfillment that comes from purchasing a second hand bike using cash.
@Pepperbike @stib @evacide or trash picking one and fixing it up! I just did that with a 1984 Schwinn World Tour. Slapped on some Cheng Shin tires, Kool Stop brake pads, dribbled some lube into the cable housing, and it was good to go!
@Stinkie @stib @evacide I did something like that with an old Sears bike from the late 70s. Cost me about $15 at a thrift shop for a very comfortable ride.

@Stinkie @evacide

Have you seen the Chinese leaf trick to cover your license plate? The leaf is taped over the middle of the plate, preventing scanning. But if you get caught with a leaf taped to your license plate it's bad. So, they tie a thread to the leaf, and then to the rear wiper. If you activate the rear wiper, the thread pulls off the leaf. It's almost as if living in a police state gives you ideas on how to circumvent their surveillance....

@Ehay2k @evacide yep! Though cheaper and easier to implement, they're much easier to spot. It'll make you more conspicuous to bystanders, which decreases your personal privacy. Other issues with the leaf/leaves, it doesn't fully obscure the plate, which can also decrease privacy.
They can theoretically be useful if you need to, say, use a toll road or something.

@evacide yet another reason why bicycles should be nearly everyone's preferred form of transport

@naught101 @evacide

If Luigi had simply remained completely masked the entire time he was doing his caper and NOT smiled at the coffee girl, he might still be free

Using a bicycle as a getaway vehicle was based

@evacide I get a subscription wall for this article

@evacide

Someone needs to get MTG to hold a bottle for them, just for a sec...

@evacide

Not sure why I'm posting this here, but if a judge or prosecutor happens to ask you if you know what the phrase "jury nullification" means, YOU DON'T.

[walks away whistling, hands in pockets]

@evacide
Don't do this.

Run fast enough, you can't.

Only the really silly would go right up to the place.

Not there, you must be.

Eyes to see you with, they have.

@evacide
Fucking islamists burning babies and cars.
@evacide
These things don’t have upward-facing cameras, as far as I’m aware. Not that anyone should use a drone to drop things onto or otherwise vandalize these things….
@latent_space @evacide commercial drones keep logs of where they go. They also obey drone geofences which are almost certainly over any dealership by now. They will snitch on you.
@arcturax @evacide
Agreed on the first point. The second isn’t true any longer, as far as I can tell. DJI and others no longer restrict flight paths (https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/14/24343928/dji-no-more-geofencing-no-fly-zone), but I’m sure they can change that again if asked to
DJI will no longer stop drones from flying over airports, wildfires, and the White House

DJI will no longer enforce “No-Fly Zones,” instead only offering a dismissible warning when pilots attempt to fly their drones into or near restricted airspace.

The Verge

@evacide probably not a good idea to create a subscription to read articles of this type either as that leaves an obvious data trail.

So I can confidently say I don't know the details in the article ...

@X31Andy @evacide use archive.is or similar sites to bypass the article walls
@evacide It's really interesting to me that cars are seen as the symbol of personal freedom in the USA. But, with automated license plate readers, you're so much more free from surveillance on a bike, a bus or on foot.
@evacide Once again Molotov cocktails are overrated. Very dramatic but not practical at all.
If you accidentally left an oilly rag on one of those tires, which you just used to wipe away some flamable glue... You might not even notice for 15 minutes or longer your car was beyond saving.
Tragic.
