The base MacBook Air should have an M1 processor

Why oh why does the base MacBook Air that Apple sells have their latest generation chip, the M4? That's so overkill for the vast majority of people, and I'd bet that most of them wouldn't even notice the speed difference in their day-to-day tasks. Sure, maybe my browser opens in

Birchtree

@matt I agree with all of this… and I think that the people making those arguments can be right about what people notice or care about. My issues with the 8GB debate only arose when the opposite side started saying 8GB was unusable or would be imminently.

It wasn’t and isn’t. AND it’s fantastic and right that Apple changed the base to 16GB.

@matt But perhaps more importantly, I wanted to mention that though overall I think I like the old birchtree design (mostly the colors and layers), I just noticed the progress circle on the new design. Nice! Love it.

@NateBarham Yeah I agree there is a fine line between "this should improve" and "this computer is unusable without X". I do think 8GB was needlessly stingy for the prices Apple asked, but those computers did at least function for people.

I really do think that the baseline of what is considered "standard" goes up over time and it would be good if more iPhone users got a thing budget Android phone buyers have been getting for years. That's just how tech works, right?

@matt The reason Apple should ship M4 over M1 is longevity. People who buy the cheaper model should not get punished with shorter support of their device becuase the SoC is older.

Similar arguments can be made of memory and SoC, but not screen refresh rate.

Not that I disagree with the point that things should improve, but I’d muuuch rather see Apple ship with 1TB baseline for storage than other stuff. That is actually a big problem is user experience currently.

@matt what the heck happened to the site layout?
@agneev It changed a few weeks ago! I take it you love it? 😝
@matt Yeah nav is far better but I do miss the little rainbow animation that's for sure
@agneev I actually want to bring that back, just need to find the time!
@matt You had me there for a second in that first paragraph. Well done Matt. 👏
