Look, I'm not psychic. I can't tell you whether or not Donald Trump is going to *successfully* annex or invade Canada; although I will say that given the *vast* disparity between Canadian and US military capabilities, it's highly unlikely Canadian leaders would risk letting it get far enough to see "U.S. Marines marching on Quebec," so folks waiting for that before they deign to take this seriously are more or less promising to do nothing to prevent this. What I can tell you is these nazis do *not* have a sense of humor, the establishment portion of the America First fascist movement has been openly building the ideological arguments to seize Canada and trying them out in public settings for several years, and watching everyday Americans fall right back into a pattern of ignorant nationalism because they're pissed off at Canadians for booing our anthem in response to Trump's threats, doesn't give me faith in the idea that this is just another doomed-to-fail Trump fever dream. This is real, and it *is* a scandal that the Very Serious PeopleTM in America are not only failing to oppose it, but not even taking it seriously enough to discuss it.

Trump’s Threat to Take Over Canada Is a Scandal

"There are numerous reasons why Trump and his government’s pervasive blathering about turning Canada into the “51st state” shouldn’t be dismissed as a “Madman Theory”-negotiating tactic, or as performative MAGA trolling. During a private phone call last month, according to a Friday New York Times report, Trump “told Mr. Trudeau that he did not believe that the treaty that demarcates the border between the two countries was valid and that he wants to revise the boundary. He offered no further explanation.”

Lately, Trump — a man who would never try to do anything world-historically rash like ending democracy in America — has told every news camera that would listen and broadcast his message to the world that he would like to rule Canada, one of the U.S.’s most vital allies. It’s not just Trump blurting it out: This has become the position of the United States federal government; his White House press secretary and his Homeland Security secretary are now, too, calling Canada “the 51st state.”

“Canada could do a lot more. Canada has been taken over, Bret, by Mexican cartels,” top Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro, bizarrely, told Fox News host Bret Baier on Wednesday, attempting to justify Trump’s tariffs. (At least Trump White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt practically admitted the tariffs are about forcing Canada’s annexation.)"

As I've mentioned elsewhere, over the course of the past ten years I've spent warning people that the American establishment right has become an full-blown, openly fascist movement full of people who literally admire the Nazis, I've received a tremendous amount of pushback from too-clever-by-half people with college degrees insisting that I can't call what has now become the America First movement "fascist" because "they're not pursing an aggressively expansionist nationalist policy." Setting aside the fact that Americans are so drunk on bipartisan nationalism that I strongly question whether or not these folks would recognize it in the wild (a fact borne out by watching our establishment largely laugh off Trump's threats to annex Canada, seize Greenland, and carve up Ukrainian resource rights with Russia) there can be little question that the Trump regime is in fact "pursuing an aggressively expansionist nationalist policy" now that he's back in power; which stands to reason - after all, by necessity the Nazis didn't start invading Europe until they'd already seized political control of Germany because that's how wars work. Furthermore, the idea that Trump is not doing so until there are "boots on the ground" in Toronto is absurd; America has long been proficient in exercising soft power and flexing our economic might to transform other countries into puppet states and colonial extraction zones for American corporations - we just don't *usually* do it to countries full of white people, so the American media complex gives it little notice.

Finally, for those still clinging to the idea that there is no *reason* for these Nazis to want to invade Canada, let me be blunt. Climate crisis is real, as the entire planet burns the Pig Empire is openly entering a phase of rampant climate imperialism, and Canada is not only predicted to be less affected than the US by climate change in the short term, but they also have vast supplies of fresh water, heavily forested land, and natural resources extremely valuable to the billionaire tech company fascists actually running the Trump administration. Of course, a US discourse that ignores climate crisis and pretends corporate power doesn't control US foreign policy, probably isn't going to mention that and would prefer to stick with "Trump cray tho."

Trump’s Threat to Take Over Canada Is a Scandal

Americans would never accept another nation threatening our country the way Trump insists on doing with Canada

Yahoo News

As I was saying tho...

I mean look folks, we call them "trade wars" for a reason, and when that trade war is attached to a repeatedly stated desire to annex our northern neighbor, the intention could not possibly be more clear. The media needs to start reporting this as "Trump's attempts to annex Canada" but they won't, because the billionaires that own these for-profit companies are very excited about the prospect of looting Canada like they loot every other country the US forces to submit and they're probably already picking out their climate crisis bunker plots in Northern Ontario.

Please note: Trump has apparently deleted the post (twice) because um, trying to annex your closest ally over social media is probably not a "an extremely stable genius" kinda thing to do. Doesn't change the fact that Trump keeps stating his clear intention to annex Canada and the American mainstream keeps pretending this guy, who has never successfully told a joke in his life, isn't serious about doing so - even though he blurts out his desire to make Canada the 51st state every 2.5 days.

Additional Note: the Alt Text box can't contain Trump's blathering so I'm posting the full contents of his Truth Social post here - weird capitalizations and all:

"Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on "Electricity" coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARRIFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous. I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S. to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. Why??? This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better, and stronger than ever - And Canada will be a big part of that. The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World - And your brilliant anthem, "O Canada," will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!"

While the American media and political establishment struggles to take Trump's open an repeated threats to annex Canada seriously, the Canadians themselves are having no such difficulties. Please keep in mind this is the national broadcaster in Canada, so more or less their most serious news organization (that still sucks for all the same reasons *our* pro genocide media does, but I digress) - they don't publish things "for clicks" and when CBC is flatly stating that Trump means to take over Canada, they're not employing hyperbole. Also, please take note of the importance of fresh water in the Canadian analysis here and cross reference it with what I said about climate imperialism above.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2fgN01mra0

(Aside: can we please not do that thing where you folks respond to this with something that more or less means "don't worry, it'll never work" and then start wargaming out a Red Dawn fantasy about how hard Canada will resist a military invasion.

For starters, Americans should be shutting it down in the streets to stop that from ever being a realistic scenario. Furthermore, pretending that the United States does not have a massive soft power and economic arsenal capable of strangling smaller countries until they have to give up without a shot being fired or their people start dying, just demonstrates that you know very little about the US's shameful history of (not so) quiet imperialism in the Americas.

I do not care if Trump will succeed in taking over Canada, what I care about is the fact that he means to do so, is actively trying to get it done, and the American establishment is playing it for jokes on late night TV or ignoring it entirely. )

‘Artificially drawn line’: The border and Trump’s plan for Canada

YouTube

I don't want to go *too* far in praising this article, because there are still a large number of problems with the way it minimizes the danger of Trump literally annexing Canada, but its existence demonstrates that at least one US media outlet (NBC) understands that Trump is not joking, or playing the angles here, and is in fact dead serious about taking over Canada:

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-quest-conquer-canada-confusing-everyone-rcna195657

Trump's quest to conquer Canada is confusing everyone

"Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump first mentioned his love for Canadians, including his “many friends” like hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. Then he riffed about how Canada shouldn’t exist as a sovereign country before getting to what has increasingly become a fixation: wholesale annexation of Canada as a U.S. state.

"Canada only works as a state," Trump said Thursday. "We don’t need anything they have. As a state, it would be one of the great states anywhere. This would be the most incredible country, visually. If you look at a map, they drew an artificial line right through it, between Canada and the U.S. Just a straight, artificial line. Somebody did it a long time ago, many many decades ago. Makes no sense. It’s so perfect as a great and cherished state."

"But why should we subsidize another country for $200 billion?" Trump continued, adding, "And again, we don’t need their lumber, we don’t need their energy. We have more than they do. We don’t need anything. We don’t need their cars. I’d much rather make the cars here. And there’s not a thing that we need. Now, there will be a little disruption, but it won’t be very long. But they need us. We really don’t need them. And we have to do this. I’m sorry."

As I said at the top of this post, this is by no means a perfect article; NBC spends far too much ink focusing on Trump's personal animus towards Justin Trudeau (who is no longer even the Canadian Prime Minister) and allowing named GOP officials to pretend they're confused by Trump's annexation plan even as they enact his orders to try and make that plan a reality. Crucially however, this report *does* make it abundantly clear that Trump is dead serious and his minions know full well that he's not joking:

"Trump has been unapologetic in his quest to conquer the Canadians — an effort he said in January would be conducted by “economic force.” The result has been a disintegration of the relationship between the U.S. and one of its closest allies, and a stock market plunge over fears of ever-increasing escalation of a trade war. Both Canadian officials and Republicans initially thought the president was merely joking, ribbing Trudeau — a longtime foil — after they met at Mar-a-Lago in November. It was after that visit that Trump first publicly floated the notion of absorbing Canada. Few think he’s joking now, and the Canadians have stopped laughing.

A source with direct knowledge of the discussions told NBC News that Trump is heavily focused on Canada in conversations with aides, who believe he is completely serious about making the country the 51st state — even with Trudeau out of power and a new prime minister in place."

Unfortunately, and despite this refreshing frankness, I have some problems with the sloppy journalism and credulous naivety with which NBC states that nobody knows where Trump is getting the idea to annex Canada from, including Republicans in his government. The fact is that MAGA-connected fascist propagandists like Candice Owens (and others) have been advocating for taking over, or even invading Canada since at least 2021-2022 for a variety of reasons; including natural resources, water rights, climate imperialism (although they don't use that term,) and even to protect their ideological brethren in the larger Canadian fascist movement from legal repercussions for their own slow-moving coup attempt in Canada, the so-called "Trucker Convoy." I genuinely have no idea if US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has any clue what Trump is thinking, but fascist media personalities in Trump's orbit certainly do, and this regime has already shown a willingness to outsource official policy from raving nazi dipshits on YouTube, so I don't think "where Trump is getting this idea from" is the kind of puzzle you need Scotland Yard's finest detectives to solve.

Trump's quest to conquer Canada is confusing everyone

Canadians and Republicans alike are confounded as President Donald Trump increasingly links a trade war to his push to annex Canada.

"Confusing everyone"?

I don't know, it's pretty fucking simple to me...
