Carney kills consumer carbon tax in first move as prime minister

Prime Minister Mark Carney wasted little time in removing a potent point of attack for the Conservatives in recent years: the consumer carbon tax.

CBC
@GottaLaff Yes, he had to do it, but we are really going to miss our Carbon Rebate.
@WJBL And PP was hitting him hard in ads tying him to the tax.
@GottaLaff Yes, Trudeau Liberal government did a terrible job of explaining Carbon Pricing and Carbon Rebates, and media helped Poilievre by just repeating his "Carbon Tax" label. Now, Carney has taken away Pierre's slogan, & I believe Carney will bring in other carbon reduction policies. Right now, we need him concentrated on tRump's nonsense. Mark Carney has always supported strong climate change policy.
He strongly believes in steering away from fossil fuels & uses science to base it on.

@WJBL @GottaLaff

The more find out about carny more I like him solid Canadian with great family values I'm all in go liberal party 🥳

@GottaLaff Politically-wise, not necessarily environmentally friendly. However, I trust Carney to deliver for Canadians.
@CanadianCrone I JUST said that to someone. PP has ads out tying Carney to the carbon tax, a really vile ad. This nullifies it. So politically, yes.

@GottaLaff @CanadianCrone

Yep. It’s a good political move. PP made decent environmental policy politically toxic, and even gave Carney a childish nickname: “carbon tax Carney.” So now, if he keeps banging on about carbon tax, he just looks like an idiot. Conservatives don’t want any climate policies.

Carney has environmental bona fides, so he will create replacement climate policy, I’m sure. But ending toxic policies early is smart, IMO.

@Scienceisnotopinions

Snowshadow shared this article last week. It’s a quick read, but it tells you a lot about Carney’s character and integrity. And his commitment to climate policy.

@KimberlyN Thanks! I will boost this for everyone to see.

@CanadianCrone @GottaLaff I am an eternal optimist, particularly at the beginning of someone's political career when you tend to be the most ambitious. I would have preferred the consumer carbon tax to remain indefinitely, however, I think it has at least started the engine of decarbonization in the consumer space. Electrification of the car fleet is ongoing and inevitable now.

The next biggest source is industry. So I really hope Carney holds the line there and uses it to speed that transition.

@GottaLaff I liked the carbon tax, as implemented. Feels like we are going backwards.

But.. in the face of US threats, it's a fair move for the moment. :(

@cowman Political move. PP went after the carbon tax explicitly in his TV ads, tying Carney to it.

@GottaLaff @cowman Short term move aimed at sucking the wind out of Pierre's Axe the Tax rallying cry.

Carbon pricing will remain in Canada in one form or another and Canadians will receive their April rebate cheques.

@gemelliz @GottaLaff @cowman It's still on for the large industrial emitters, like the oil sands
